Category for Incorrect Merges

+11 votes
OK, I know we made a lot of changes in categories, but, I have lost the category that the ARborists used to identify where someone had done either a destructive merge or an accidental incorrect merge.

The category used to be Bad Merges and was linked to the Maintenance Categories.   Can someone tell me what the new category is?

Looks like there are two categories that could be used. One is under Arborist Project Maintenance Categories – Bad Merge. The other is Conflated Profiles.

What is the difference between bad merges and conflated profiles?
A conflated profile may be just two separate individuals who are similar, but who get conflated in various sources as the same person.

For example, a man with two wives, who is really two separate men. So the conflation is independent of whether there were ever any merges or not. This situation is probably much more common that a bad merge.
Or a descendant of a prominent family who has been grafted into a less prominent family by a sloppy genealogist/researcher.

This baby was never merged, but he's two different men.

(To clarify: I'm not pointing a finger at the profile manager, who got the information somewhere. Bad genealogy gets repeated).

A bad merge is really where the two profiles that are merged were OBVIOUSLY not the same person....usually due to vandalism or a total misunderstanding of merges.

Great point Robin.

I think all these examples have really helped clarify the difference between the categories.
