Should Marriage End Date only be used for divorce?

Should I use Marriage End Date when a spouse has died, and surviving spouse remarries? Or is this only for divorce?

I use for divorce/annulment etc.  I also use the death date when there are subsequent marriages. This can be helpful in determining which of the children belong to which mother, when then all have the father's last name - but he had multiple spouses.

I would think the dates of marriage just as, if not more, useful for that purpose.

I tend to only use it for divorce, annulment and so on, death of a partner is obvious from the profile date and of course the narrative text in the Biography section. Other people use it for death dates but it is I think, personal prefferences.

Mm.... I went to the help index and date fields and found NOTHING about the Marriage End Date. Mmm... Seems like there should be help text for this.
