Kiwi Crew Team Chat for the Source-a-Thon [closed]

For members of the Kiwi Crew team to chat about anything really - including genealogy, the source-a-thon and the NZ election (within reason).

Whether or not we use this same chat during the marathon, I dont know. Probably depends on how long this one gets!!

Robynne - you might consider untagging this discussion from "source-a-thon" (and later New Zealand) or we will end up flooding the whole source-a-thon with notifications of our chats.

and just tag it with "The_Kiwi_Crew"

and for team members to add the tag "The_Kiwi_Crew" to the Tags they are following (if they have space or  at least temp till after the source-a-thon)
OK So can I just make a new tag called the Kiwi Crew?

Hows that?
perfect :-)

now all we need is for team members to include the tag on those they are following
decisions decisions, which tag do I drop since I already have 20 - LOL
OK I have removed one tag and have replaced it with the kiwi crew tag as seen above. I hope this works!!
Updates to the Wikitree+ (Ales) lists generally are available around mid-day Tuesday (NZ Time)  ( Give or take a few hrs) so I would presume that he will publish the Source-a-thon lists at the same time.

That was meant to be a separate answer - not another comment - o well :-)
Yes he did say on his original post that he would update on Monday EDT  which is Tuesday for NZ.

But he actually published the lists last week - Thursday or Friday actually.

Let me see if I can find the original post - BRB

-----------------------

Found it - its dated 2 days ago which was Friday at the earliest.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/467284/source-a-thon-tables-by-country?show=467284#q467284

And THIS is the original page of Lists!!

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DBE_Unsourced
Yep - Updated lists should be published tomorrow (NZ time) with any additions and subtractions from the dump that is taken from the live wikitree tree database on Monday morning (NZ time)  - it takes about 24hrs for Ales's servers to process that data into the "Suggestion reports" and the other reports he does.
I have noticed that the 802 and 803 category have profiles that are private (green level) and therefore we cannot touch them, so I'm just going to ignore those. There are less than 50 of them, so I dont beleive that will make too much of a difference.
Yep the open 802/803s off the 'suggestions' , from NZ, get headings added and tagged with "Unsourced|New Zealand" by the NZ Datadoctors just about every week and what is left are green locked
So, just to be clear...if I source something, I post a comment with the changes and a link to the profile? I've been looking a little at a couple of challenge threads they've had recently. Sorry, been a bit slow catching up on this stuff.
No Raewyn.

When you add a source to a profile, you then click the challenge tracker to count that profile.

Please watch the video that is linked below in one of the other posts.

We will not be manually counting, The challenge tracker will do the counting for us.

ASSIGNMENTS!!!!

These are the following Assigned Letters or lists

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Category:New_Zealand_Unsourced_Profiles&from=A

Remember to use the alphabet at the top to jump to your assigned letter.

BCHMS are long lists and have 2 names assigned.

Some of you only have only one letter - but those are the LONG lists!!

If you should happen to finish your list before the 3 days are up, you can go anywhere on the lists to help out....

Aim for 100 profiles sourced minimum  - more if you can.

OOPS - Those on the alphabet lists - IGNORE any profiles with birth places in UK or Ireland - Paula and Lucy will do those!!

IF you want to do the profiles with birth places elsewhere, you can try but dont spend too much time on them. One Death source in NZ is good enough.

If you want to swap lists with someone else - that's fine too. Dont need my permission - just go ahead and do it.

I assigned the lists to try and get even coverage for all of them.

There is one Q profile which is british so we can all ignore that one. The other unusual letters, - U, V, Y, Z - anyone can do those since those lists are very small!! There are no profiles for X.

GOOD LUCK

Is things "slow" on the server?
I had been working through P as it was my letter and kept getting conflicts....we may have been on the same ones. I didnt get to my Ts
But i will be on a plane or at airports until 3pm so go for the rest of the Ps and Ts. I should be back online at 3pm
I tagged a few more as unsourced yesterday so there could be a few more in letters already done
I think I might know why I was never able to see the tracker and why the page always timed out when I'd click on it. Hubby said he opened a bunch of ports up on our router the other day and now I'm having trouble accessing pages of all description. And yet, I can still access Stuff! (Thank goodness - that's like my lifeline to home!). The only way I got in to Wikitree today was by going via google and using a page I didn't go to often and I have cleared history, cookies etc. I've tried three browsers...so not sure what the heck but he knows I'm annoyed LOL.
Well thats good that you may have some of the answer, Raewyn. You are logged as doing 50 profiles so thats better than none at all.

In the meantime, having just gotten 4 hours of sleep last night, I am going to take a break, and maybe a nap - before I make the last push after the next hangout. I am quite tired.

I have been doing some profiles under the S letter.

Will be back later for that last push..
Liane, I have done as much with P as I can. I thought I'd look at R after lunch starting from the bottom.
Are you doing "S's", Robynne. Things are a little confusing with two people doing the same letter. I commented some time ago that I was doing the S's from the bottom up.
I was doing S from the top before I took my break. I can go back to that or go back to my Ms - but like someone else said - the MCs are getting annoying..

We have just 3 hours to go...

I amm runnng on empty - didnt have a nap - just relaxed - if I fall asleep I will never wake up.

So One last Push for 2 and a half hours to the end.

Everyone is doing great!!
Having to play "detective" with some of the S profiles I'm doing at the moment.

I received my DNA results couple of days ago, that was very interesting
by Campbell Braddock G2G6 Mach 8 (81.8k points)
Cool Campbell. So what did they tell you? Any surprises?
Oh and which company did you use?

Are you going to upload your results to GEDmatch and to Wikitree?

How much did the test costs and how long did the testing take?

I am trying to decide if it would be worth while to get my mother and sister to have their DNA tests done - as long as it is the cheek swab test.

My sister could afford it, but my mother is on her pension.
98%    Europe
✅ 47% Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales
✅ 31% Europe West (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein)
✅ 11% Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Denmark)
✅ 5% Ireland (Ireland, Wales, Scotland
✅ 2% Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal)
✅ 1% Finland/Northwest Russia (Ireland, Wales, Scotland
✅ 2% Iberian Peninsula (Finland, Russia (northwest)))
✅ <1% Italy/Greece (Italy, Greece)
1%    Africa
✅ 1% Africa North (Morocco, Western Sahara, Algeria, Libya)
< 1%    Asia
✅ <1% Asia South (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka)

I have over 14,000 DNA matches going back 8 generations on Ancestry
AncestryDNA

Yes I did upload it to gedmatch and WikiTree

Cost me $59nz, very cheap flash deal
$59NZ - that's actually pretty good.

Thanks.
Normally they cost AUD $179 including shipping and you still have to convert that to NZD and there's a Ancestry conversion fee of $4
So is that on sale at the moment?

And how long does it take to get the results back from Australia?
The sale lasted like 12 hours, in early-mid August, I had signed up to their email notifications. My sample was sent from New Zealand to Northern Ireland, they analysed my DNA and I received it all within 5 weeks, and it doesn't go to Australia, it's AncestryDNA International that run the show. :-)
That sounds rather confusing and complicated...
That's a lot of matches. I'm considering asking my parents to do one but I wasn't sure how useful it was for non-Americans.
As a female Kiwi living in the US, it can be helpful. I was able to fortify something with relation to one of my family lines, but there are different kinds of tests. Ones specifically for women, one for men and one that's the general one that traces origins, like Ancestry' and 23 and Me.. I had my Dad's Y-DNA done through Family Tree DNA, but unless I get the family finder for him, my Ancestry DNA won't show up that we are a match as I don't have a Y chromosome.
I think I would go with the Autosomal one as the Cullen side of family is quite well researched back to when the records stop. I did get contacted by a cousin who has done one and suggested a DNA test could be useful to help figure out a father of an ancestor of ours, as she was illegitimate. Next time I talk to my parents I might bring it up.

I am still having trouble accessing anything on BDM Online - always some technical error... for the past 24 hours.

I think Paula was having trouble too.

But the rest of you not? I wonder if it is browser specific (or due to a plug in).
by Lianne Trevarthen G2G6 Mach 4 (46.6k points)
BDM works fine for me. although it is a little slow - but that could because  my cache getting full.

I use Firefox - the latest version - whatever number that is.
BDM's are working with me in Otago I use chrome.

Robynne if you use chrome, there is a chrome extension called WikiTree X. Very useful tool, for transferring data from familysearch or  Ancestry to create a new profile.
The BDM datadase was coming up with processing errors or just stalling or timing out most of  last evening but as of a couple of hrs ago has been working fine for me
Hopefully it doesn't do the same during the source-a-thon. No maintenance notifications seem to be popping up on any of the main websites so we might get lucky and have full access for the weekend. I tried to add a few New Zealand profiles yesterday but gave up because I needed the BDM database. Must try to remember what I was working on.
Have just checked the BDM and as of now - 0035 NZ time - half past midnight - the BDM is working fine and there are no red messages so we should be OK.

They wont do anything on the weekend, and it is now Saturday just gone midnight in NZ. We start at 5 PM Saturday in NZ.
That's good news. I was having issues with the paperspast website yesterday. Hopefully it holds up too. It seemed to come back after an hour or so.

I've added the tag so I hope it works ok. I did a few BDMs over the weekend using Safari and it seemed to be fine. I did have a look at the unsourced list over the weekend and it looked a bit daunting!
by Fiona McMichael G2G6 Pilot (209k points)
EDITED

I will be assigning 2 people per page for the longer letters and one letter per person for the shorter letter lists.

You are encouraged to do as many as possible, but if you dont finish the your letter you are assigned, that;s no biggie.

I want to try and encourage each team members to aim for a minimum of 100 sourced profiles.

You can of course do more than that, the more the better, but a minimum of 100 is a nice goal to aim for - especially since we do have 3 days to do these and not just one day like the sprints!!

Just so you all know

Neil and Robynne will both be on the Hangout videos - at different times.

Robynne will be on at - what is 3 AM EDT in NYC and Toronto - but is 8 PM in NZ - on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Neil will be on the Hangouts at - is this right Neil - it looks like 2 AM and 2 PM in NZ - which are 9 am and 9 pm EDT in NYC and Toronto for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
I'm lost Robynne. Where do I go to check "my times" please? The grey matter is in "source" mode.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Source-a-Thon_Hangouts

This is the Hangout Schedule set to NYC (and Toronto) time. This shows the times of where you are currently posted. I can see that Eowyn has read your 9 am and 9 pm NZT as EDT time and they clearly dont match what you wanted.

Tell me what times in NZ you are available and I will translate them to EDT and pass them on to Eowyn for you. The sooner the better. I weill be up until the 8 pm hangout (which is 3 am for me) before going to bed, so you can take the 8 am NZT time if you wish - Thats pretty close to 9 am.

Just reply to this post.

Robynne
OK Neil has chosen to keep the times that Eowyn has slotted him in for - which happen to be 2 am and 2 pm in NZ - but he says he can do that.

YAAAAAAY Neil!!
My first hangout ws a disaster!!  I dont have a google account and I dont like Chrome.

Neil, you need to have a Google account already set up and you prerferably need to use IE or Chrome.

Firefox no longer supports the plugin for the Hangouts video thinga-ma-jig

I hate google, hate chrome and I use firefox.

I may have to bow out of my timeslots - altogether. DRATS!!

Anyway, Its past 3 AM (past 8 pm in NZ)  So I am off to bed for now!!

See you guys later.

A new VIDEO has just been posted to youtube on how to source a profile for the source-a-thon. This video was made by Eowyn and Julie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbhcrvsoUVU&feature=youtu.be

We Kiwis do NOT need to use the wiki Research tool as we have our own BDM Database that most of us will use, If you do want to use the research tool for Family Search, that is fine.

Note that they did NOT use any of the lists that Ales made. They used the Alphabet lists.

The video says nothing about filling in the "Explain your changes" box. I have a little blurb that says Adding Sources and click that every time, I just dont specify the source. dont have time for that.

As you can see on the challenge tracker, it will only allow one source to be identified no matter how many sources you actually added.

So Technically you really ONLY NEED ONE SOURCE per profile!!!

DONT waste time doing too much searching if you have found ONE source and cannot find any more. ONE source is acceptable.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
The video is really simple and makes it look really easy to do.

DO YOU KNOW WHICH PROFILES CAN BE COUNTED?

Eowyn has requested that the team captains post the below link on our team chat pages so that we can all read and learn.

This basically tells us which profile can be counted.

We Kiwis already know all this, but when the boss lady speaks, I obey LOL

If the unsourced profile doesn't have a full date, e.g. 30 September 1900 for either birth, marriage or death, are we going to use DIA BDM's capabilities to find them or just stay with the "year" involved?

by Neil McNicol G2G6 (9.9k points)
If you can find those fast, go for it.

I am not planning doing all of that - too finicky and time consuming for me.

It can sometimes take 5 to 7 cuts to find the right date for one profile. More if you dont even know what year it was.

Thats the kind of thing that can be done when we are not in a sprint or a marathon!!

I did ask if anyone wanted to use SKYPE but got no replies.

Otherwise we stop and chat on the hangout videos every 3 hours
Don't use skype myself - but shall i see if i can figure out just a text google hangout for our group?

GO Waikato!!  My home region!!

No worries Darren.

Rugby is more important than sourcing. LOL
No it is family that is most important. We are giving my son his first rugby match to go watch at the ground.
Good for family - but rugby is still important!! LOL

Dont forget to tell me who wins!!
Canterbury won 37-17.
Ahh drats!!  Thanks Darren.

I found that a quick search of the BDM for B and D And M on the database doesnt take long. If I found all 3 then I would post all 3 - but most of the time I am lucky if I can post 1 or 2 - but that is better than nothing.

Robynne
It's the copying & pasting of my pre-defined templates for each and then inserting names into placeholders.
Anyone else having problems with the server in Slovenia? When you save a profile, it takes a long time after "clicking on 'Challenge Tracker' " for the page to 'load'.
Yes, it is slow - but I can be patient - I just wait - it will eventually go through.
Now I can't even load the "tracking" pages. I believe some of my profiles weren't saved??
Something "ain't right" in Slovenia. It certainly not my end, have cleaned the cache and things are real slow still. Time to have some lunch!
Great BDM got back up promptly but now having trouble saving to WikiTree. Keeps timing out but not on other websites. Wonder if there is high usage when i am trying to save.
Probably is overloaded Lianne - you could try clearing your cache and taking a break. It`s around midnight in Slovenia now - 7 pm EDT Saturday and I think 9 or 10 am on Sunday in Sydney.

Me - I am doing the tortoise act - slow and steady wins the race. I am already 1 third of the way there and the first day is not over yet.

For now my goal is to do 100 profiles!!
Believe me, I am taking lots of breaks... still I have done about 51 profiles, but have missed a few as I know I forgot to click the tracker. Never mind not too many.

Another break now to go to lunch at the beach (nice break, but it might actually rain on the Gold Coast!)
It's coming up to midnight EDT - end of Day 1 - I got my 50 profiles for the day - hope to do 100 more - 50 each on the nest 2 days.

Have fun Lianne!!

So we are now near the end of Day 1.  It is just after 10 pm EDT and 3 PM sunday in NZ.

It feels like it has been such a long day. Probably becasue the BDM was offline for a good part of that time.

Did you all feel that the first day was a LOOOONG day?

We still have 2 more days to go.

It's now 0200 EDT Sunday and 7 pm Sun in NZ

I am off to bed and I will be back in the next 6 to 8 hours.

Has anyone on the Kiwi Crew won any prizes yet?
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
I haven't bothered checking that. Not really interested in prizes.
I desperately want to win a DNA prize to get my DNA tested

THat's why I get to as many hangouts as I can.
Me on the last round - but as its getting near the end of the list there wasn't much left

(unless if anyone needs any Danish records investigated ?- sing out now - so I can claim that for the Kiwi Crew)
I'm claiming it - if you're sure. I do have a danish relative for whom 2 hours could be very useful!  Thanks Graeme

I'll take my name out of the hat and your name can go back in for the last few rounds.
Graeme you sure you want to actually CLAIM that prize?

It could come straight to me leaving you to maybe grab another prize - if you are lucky...
Either way - it dosen't bother me at all  - you can make arrangements with Julie/Eowyn for it to go straight to you
Just saw this, actually of Danish descent...

GRAEME OLNEY!!!

GRAEME - You won a prize at the last Hangout - not that there is much choice. The Sunday 2 pm hangout NZT - the last one before the "new day" starts.

You have 2 hours 30 minutes to claim a prize. If you wish, You could claim the Kottal 2 hours of research and I can take that off your hands - I do have a danish relative that I need help with and I cannot read danish!!  I am half joking and half serious  - dont know which. LOL

Can someone please tell Graeme Thanks.
