Hello Team Acadia participants!

Just setting up a thread where we can coordinate our efforts.

Since this is my first Source-a-Thon, I may need your help with tips and tricks on how to coordinate our work.

So let me ask you what are your areas of expertise? I'm guessing we'll have a mix of Louisiana experts and New Brunswick experts? I suspect we can all work on pre-deportation profiles, but post-deportation we might stick to the ones closer to our respective home areas? (Not a hard rule, just a guess!)

So, let me know what you all have planned for this weekend! I'm looking forward to ending up with a bunch of sourced profiles!
in The Tree House by Roland Arsenault G2G6 Mach 5 (58.9k points)
I have not yet participated in these events but am available to engage sometime during the weekend to get a feel for how it goes and begin to understand what I might do to help.  As far as I know, I have very limited info on source material.  I have Ancestry and Family Search..
Thomas, have you signed up for the Source-a-Thon yet? If you want to do so, mention that you want to join Team Acadia! We'd be happy to have you.

See the How to register section on the Source-a-Thon help page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Source-a-Thon#How_to_register
Stealing good Nor'Easter people huh? You definitely bear watching. :D
I wouldn't call it "stealing" if they came over under their own free will. I swear no coercion, bribes or force were used in attracting new team members!
Yes I signed up, #180.  Now need to get the process so I can do some sources .  How do I find those that need sourcing?

We only have 628 "Unsourced Acadians" left (and I've been adding some that I've seen as I go along). I believe that means we've sourced over half of what we had. Great Team!

Nice! We are also in a battle for 20th place with the Merry Moppers. I think we should mop them up!
We're ahead of Merry Moppers by a few. Is it over yet?
I think we beat the moppers!
Looking at the normalized scores, which I think is the average per team member, it looks like we might be in 7th! Good job team!!
Awww. It looks like my 116 went to the Nor'Easters. Oh well, this was my first SourceAThon, and I had a lot of fun!
Don't worry Denise, at the end what matters is that we sourced a bunch of profiles. We did well, looking at the normalized scores we finished in 7th so a job well done everyone!

My family is Acadian from all sides (my maternal and paternal, and my husband's maternal and paternal too!), and we were not deported. We went from Beaubassin to PEI to northeastern NB so that is pretty much my area of "expertise" (especially the Caraquet/Paquetville area).  I've listed resources I have in my personal collection on my profile; if anyone is ever stuck on something that's covered there, I'd be happy to check it for you.

Edited to add: I am also francophone, and am usually pretty good at deciphering the old handwriting that we often see in the registers, etc. and at translating.
by Denise Chiasson G2G6 Mach 2 (22.1k points)
I figured you were from "la péninsule" based on the sources you had listed on your profile. My ancestors followed a similar path via Beaubassin and PEI before settling in the Bouctouche/Cocagne area.
I was actually born and raised in Southern Ontario, but my Dad is from Paquetville and my Mom from Grande Anse.
I was close! Now I have the "Paquetville" song stuck in my head! :)
My sincerest  apologies...
Was fortunate to meet Edith once, years ago. She's very nice, and funny on stage. Turns out we're distant cousins (everyone from the Péninsule is related somehow!)
Cool!

I have access to the major sources for most aspects of the Acadian diaspora, but they are most extensive in Louisiana. However, most of the unsourced Louisiana profiles fall under another team Southern Sourcerers, don't they? I guess it depends on if they carry the Unsourced|Louisiana or Unsourced|Acadia tag....

I have access to  DGFA, Rieder & Rieder's Acadian Exiles in the American Colonies (and some of Jehn's book of the same), Acadians in France Vol I, Acadian Church Records, Port Lajoye, Ile St. Jean 1749-1758 by Timothy Hebert, Acadian Church Records 1679-1757 by DeVille, Volume 1a of Diocese of Baton Rouge (Registers of St Charles aux Mines 1707-1748), plus the usual online sources.

For Louisiana I do have the first 10 volumes of Diocese of Baton Rouge, the first 7 volumes of South Louisiana Records, and the Southwest Louisiana Records CD.  And I almost forgot-- the first 6 volumes of Archdiocese of New Orleans
by Donna Storz G2G6 Mach 2 (24.8k points)
Yeah, I'm not sure exactly who should be responsible for Louisiana Acadians. Last I checked, we had over 500 unsourced Acadian profiles so that should keep us busy for a while!
I added a bunch last night and today.
I took care of most of the Louisiana unsourced profiles--the ones left are beyond me. Also a bunch of the unsourced Girouard profiles don't have dates AND a lot of these folks are still living and their profiles are OPEN.

Roland, I don't have any particular expertise in Acadian sources but am willing to give it a try (always willing to learn).  My family is all Canadian (no Louisiana).   Can you tell me where you most need help?
by Cindy Cooper G2G6 Pilot (329k points)
We are happy to have you Cindy! Have you registered in the proper G2G thread and officially asked there to join Team Acadia?

So, you'll notice on out team page (the WikiTree profile linked to this question), that I have a link to the unsourced Acadian profiles category. You can pick from that list.

I'm not sure how we should divide up that list, since depending on time frame and location, some of us may have more experience with the relevant sources that others. For instance, I'll jump on those from southeastern New Brunswick.

As for sources, free ones are available for vital records from both the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia provincial archives. I know that Family Search has church records for Quebec, but I'm not sure if the rest of Acadia has made it there. Alternatively, if you have the proper Ancestry subscription, you can find Acadian church records as part of the Drouin collection. I do have such a subscription so I could do lookups if I'm given the parish and probable time frame.
OK I just registered.  I suppose after I get a bib number then I can put that on your team list.  I do have Ancestry.ca so I can use the Drouin Collection.  I have the links to the archives from the project page.  Good place to start.

Here are a couple of G2G posts that may be relevant as we get ready for this.

Do you know how to participate in the Source-a-Thon? Challenge Tracker makes it easy.

and

What profiles count as "unsourced" for the Source-a-Thon?

What interesting to note is "If it only has second-hand sources, such as other user-generated trees, it fits our definition of unsourced.". By my interpretation, that means that Nos Origines, Genealogie Acadienne and similar site do not qualify in removing "unsourced" from a profile.

Of course, those sites are still useful in helping guide our search for primary records. It can help us figure out what time frame and collection to use for our search.

Edit: I need to stop trying to capitalize the 2 and writing G@G by mistake!

by Roland Arsenault G2G6 Mach 5 (58.9k points)
That's how I've always understood the sourcing, as those sites do not have sources for their info. Good place to start, but then you have to source with primary sources. Ancestry is a bit trickier - some do have sources so I read through the data post that gets dumped in the profile. Often it's just a "family tree", but other times there's reference to Drouin, or a census, or parish records.

This is what Ales wrote recently

I need to define unsourced profiles for source-a-thon and other challenges.

By now we have:

  • All profiles in unsourced category.
  • All profiles with error 802 Empty profile:
  • All profiles with error 803 Almost empty profile:
  • Maybe we can set even higher limit.803 is limited with 50 letters, but for profile to have a Bio and some sources, I think it must be at least 500 bytes long. I will have a look in the data to see where actual sources start to appear. Can you give me some examples of very short sourced profiles.
  • All profiles with empty birth date.
  • All profiles with empty death date if born before 150 years
  • How about All profiles with empty birth location. If you have a source, you also know the place? And same for Death location.
  • I was also thinking to find all profiles with empty Sources section and no inline citations. but I don't think it is doable for this SAT. Maybe next year. The main point here would be to ignore Ancestry trees as a source.

Any other ideas welcome.

Nosorigines is supposed to have sources. There are fields for such in their templates. Not everyone enters them though.  DGFA and Drouin are the most used sources, but I've also seen Jehn, Rieder, Voorhies, cited. So much like ancestry and other sources-- look at the link to see if they are an actual source.  For DGFA it will sometimes say "par S. White" or similar.  And baptism records don't always state Drouin, but do state the parish name.  One example is the entry for my 5xggp http://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?genealogie=Marie_Dugas&pid=1127853&lng=fr.  For an even more thorough one, take a look at her son Jean Baptiste.
I don't understand the tracker...

I think it said I did 91, but what is the 16 and 75?

Roland, I am still reviewing my Acadian extended family to find unsourced profiles.  Will they be added to the list at this point?  Should I keep going?
by Cindy Cooper G2G6 Pilot (329k points)
I think they will be added to the list because I think they are added to the Unsourced category instantly. I'm still adding Acadian and Unsourced|Acadian as necessary when I encounter profiles missing those.

I've been tracing Acadian descendants of the Rivet line for many years. They were deported to Maryland and then made their way to Louisiana in 1768-1769. I have a personal copy of the complete sets of books for DGFA, BRDA, and SWLR (CD + books 1901-1915), as well as an Ancestry.com subscription. So I could handle any profiles requiring those sources.

Will there be any attempts at dividing up the list to keep us from bumping into each other, or will it just be a free-for-all? Also, I'm assuming that once sources have been added to a profile, the "unsourced" list will automatically update to remove that profile from the list. Is that your understanding?
by Joyce Rivette G2G6 Pilot (179k points)
Nice set of source material!

I haven't participated in a Source-a-Thon before so I'm not sure the best way to handle not bumping into each other. I guess we could call dibs in this thread to let other know what we are working on.

I do think that removing the {{Unsourced}} template will remove the profile from the unsourced category, so refreshing that page should update it.

There are profiles that have both the Louisiana and Acadian templates--the ones who were deported and emigrated to Louisiana. We don't have to work on just our profiles though. There are 2 Data Base error numbers that are automatically unsourced: they are the empty profile and almost empty profile. I believe ales will get a list of those. They would be up for grabs for anyone I think?

I have quite a few Acadian sources including the DGFA, several volumes relating to the Acadians deported to England and then St. Malo, and a subscription to Ancestry. For Louisiana, I have a lot of parish church records.

The Grand-Pré church records are actually housed in St. Gabriel Louisiana, Diocese of Baton Rouge. These are records that were carried into exile in secret since the British were destroying everything. I have a copy of that volume. (The Registers of St. Charles aux Mines in Acadia, from Grand Pré, carried into exile to St. Gabriel Church of Iberville, LA).

I will take whatever letter of the alphabet I am given.

Thanks for getting this up and running Roland!
by Jacqueline Girouard G2G6 Mach 7 (74.6k points)
No problem Jackie, thanks for encouraging me to lead a team!

So, should I be assigning out letters? I would prefer that team members pick a letter, or surname, or whatever criteria they choose and report in this thread. I'll be away from home most of the weekend so won't be able to keep close eyes on things so I'm hoping we can mostly self-organize.
Ok by me they self-assign. I'll be on hand to try to answer questions as they arise but it does look to be well-organized by the folks at the helm. We should be fine. I'm going to start on the 40 or so unsourced profiles in my watchlist that have varying surnames and some don't have the Acadian unsourced tag, just unsourced.
If we aren't assigned a group of profiles to work on, I plan to start at the end of the alphabet and pick out the people who appear in DGFA. After working my way through to the beginning (not likely ha!) I guess I'll start cherry-picking unsourced Louisiana profiles.
Sounds good Joyce! BTW, you know about the {{DGFA-1}} template right? It helps us be consistent when citing it.
Now I do! I'll plan to use it. Is there a similar global-type template for the BRDA and SWLR books?

The list of the ones I have so far are on this page.

Their use fall in a gray area so I haven't been advertising them a lot.

I do consider the Acadian Project as an area where we can experiment with such "source shortcut templates" so I can create some for you.

Hi Team!

As I write this, we are a few hours away from the start of the Source-a-Thon.

We have a good mix of veteran WikiTree-ers and newer members in our team, so I'm confident we'll do well.

So, I do have a few family obligations this weekend, and we all need to sleep sometime so I won't always be at my computer. I encourage you all to post progress and questions here so we can all be on the same page and all help each other out.

With over 1000 unsourced Acadian profiles last time I checked, I suspect that it will be unlikely that we'll all be working on the same profile at the same time, so I'm not to assigned profiles to you. To minimize the small chance that two of you might pick the same profile, I encourage you post what you plan to work on in general as a head up to the rest of us.

If you do get stuck or have questions, don't hesitate to post here or send me a private message. I'll try to respond as soon as I can.

Bonne chance! Go Team Acadia!

The Source-a-Thon has started so I sourced a couple of profile to try out the tracking. Just hit the track button on top of the page after saving an edit.

I did add a link to the team page to the results table, but our team is not showing up on it when I checked. I'm heading to bed now so I'll check back tomorrow morning.
by Roland Arsenault G2G6 Mach 5 (58.9k points)
Good morning team!

I'll be sourcing for a bit this morning. I'll start working on the B's.
I am working on anything that should be in PANB. I will stay away from the B's for now. ;o)
Arg! I am stuck in the weeds with some 16th/17th centurey profiles I either adopted or who are in my tree somehow. It is slow going but I have been able to eliminate a few through sourcing and another few from Unsourced Acadian list--I dispatched them to France or Quebec as needed! I will not rack up numbers this way but it pleases me to get some of these off my unsourced list--I started with around 40 and now at 31.
I'll work mostly on another letter except that I would like to do the Bourg profiles.  Starting with those now.
I am done with my unsourced B's so you're good to go.
I'm done for a while as I'm heading to a family thing. Cindy, don't hesitate to work on the Bourgs, I wouldn't get to them in a while even if I start working on the early B's again!

I get stuck in the weeds as well sometimes. I'm not too woried about it because I prefer quality of quantity. I'm just happy that we are making good quality progress on Acadian profiles even if we don't source as many as other teams.
I'm going to spend a bit of time with the A's tonight...
Go Dawn Ellis! She's leading Team Acadia with 52 profiles sourced! Great job everybody! http://wikitree.sdms.si/function/WTChallengesScores/Scores.htm?code=SourceaThon2017&Type=0
Finally home and sitting at my desktop computer after a busy weekend. I see that you all are doing very well and I have quite a bit of catching up to do! I do a bit tonight, but will have to go to bed soon so I'll try catching up tomorrow evening before this all ends!
Frustrated. I'm still showing up on the Nor'Easters Team instead of the Acadia Team. Don't know what else to do...
I'll see what I can do Denise, for now just keep on sourcing!
Oui mon capitaine!

I've finished what I can do on the Bourg profiles.  There were a few I just could not find:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bourg-2

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bourg-269

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bourg-287

I'll work on something else tomorrow.  If you want to assign me a letter no one else is working on, I'd be happy to take something.
by Cindy Cooper G2G6 Pilot (329k points)
I found sources for Bourg-2
Nice! I looked for a bit but found nothing. Good job!
The Team just ahead of us in points is "Musty Dusty" They have 331 and we have 307. Let's push them into higher gear by breathing down their necks so to speak. Go Acadians!!!
Thanks, Jackie!
Great job everyone! I haven't been able to source today, but have been peeking at the scores one and a while and I'm happy to see us climbing!!!

I'm finding some profiles with issues...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Belliveau-91 :  It has her parents as Jean Belliveau and Jeanne Gaudet. I've checked 37 families, DGFA, DGFA-corrections and there is no daughter noted who married Germain Pellerin.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bastineau-2 a profile for the spouse of Louis Robichaud, whom SAW says name is unknown.
by Donna Storz G2G6 Mach 2 (24.8k points)
I found a few also that caused several hours of work. We need to have a space page for "bad boys".
I'm surprised at how many I've had to correct the parents on.... at least that's an easy fix.
+3 votes
I've been furiously sourcing, but it looks like the credit may go to the Nor'Easters team. Somehow, I got listed with them. I've asked if that can be corrected... Oh well, at least the profiles are being sourced (I have been using the Acadian list!)
by Denise Chiasson G2G6 Mach 2 (22.1k points)
I voted it down to express my sadness...lol. Thanks Denise for your hard work on our Acadian profiles. And a shout out to those who worked tirelessly to get the {{Unsourced|Acadian}} template on the profiles so we can find them!
I only have one Chiasson left - Fred. I only know of him from family notes, he never married so no children. For all I know, Fred is a nickname for someone I have well documented. Argh! I welcome any help anyone can offer - I've gone cross-eyed on this one a few times...
Good news! Chris Whitten is having me switched to the Acadian Team! WooHoo!
Woohoo! Good news that you are rejoining us!!! I'll owe Chris a beer or something next time I see him!
Yay!!  We're on a roll. 450 sourced profiles so far. Cindy Cooper is on fire!! with 126 profiles. We have passed Musty Dusty and are closing in on SA Springboks. Go Team! I don't see Denise's stats yet but that will help a lot.
Have you ever had one of those times when you always heard someone called something, like Mon oncle Fred, and could find nothing on him despite looking everywhere. And then, out of the blue while you're looking for someone else, you find his army registration record and his name was... Alfred. Now why didn't I think of that!?! I found my Fred!

My saddest research so far... a mother who lost four children before they were one year old. This is certainly a family I'll follow-up on later and try to find some happier news!
by Denise Chiasson G2G6 Mach 2 (22.1k points)
I hate to see that. I remember the first time I saw that one of my ancestors had lost his who family at sea. It stayed with me all week.

Edit: I found my registration email :) Everything is fine now - have fun sourcing, I'm going to contact my team now :D xoxo
>> I'm completely lost, I had a big concert yesterday and many rehearsals up until now (cuz we have another concert coming up - on Tuesday)- I registered for the Source-a-Thon but I don't know what team I'm in - and I forgot to write down the number I got :( Oh man. Am I in team Arcadia if I can see this chat here? Can anyone help me please? I started adding sources already, though.
Greetings from across the big pond!

Good job! I might tackle some of those profiles tomorrow if no one gets to them. They are from my neck of the woods.
I didn't enter them, I adopted them. I thought it would make them easier to find. I know nothing about them, but I will try. There are hundreds of profiles added with no sources by a specific person. I am finding it very frustrating. She is still doing it.
You are good to adopt them, I hope you can find something.  I found a whole bunch where I could get sources, so those were the ones left in that family name.     Was wishing I could get a list of my unsourced profiles to work on . . .
Roland, I did what I could for my part on the Acadians, eventually checking those I could through any census or town listing.  I am really stuck on sources for the rest.  I switched over to Quebec, where I have good reference materials.
I have 4 of the five... Can't find Rita. Have searcher under Rita and Marguerite ...arrrghhh!

Got Her!!!
Good job Dawn!

Cindy, working on Quebec profiles is fine. Our team still gets the points so go for it!
Cindy, try this to find your unsourced profiles. On your page, go to Find and click on unsourced profiles down toward the bottom of the list. That should be a list of those that are on your watchlist.
Thank you, Jackie.  I never knew that was there!  I'll work on those today (13 of them).

Question...

Is there a timeline somewhere? I need to know dates for Port-Royal vs dates for Annapolis-Royal.

Thanks
by Dawn Ellis G2G6 Pilot (103k points)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port-Royal_(Acadia)

Looks like 1710 is when it was renamed to Annapolis-Royal.
oops, i assumed the names changed after deportation. Thanks Roland
But the Parish register is still called Port-Royal, so that is what I have used in the source.

Seems to me profiles such as [[Daigle-43|Unknown Daigle]] and [[Daigle-44|Unknown Daigle]] that have absolutely nothing informative in them should just be merged with active profiles and disappear.  Does WikiTree have a policy on this type of thing?

by Denise Chiasson G2G6 Mach 2 (22.1k points)
Thanks Dawn! I knew there had to be something.
Those may be for unknown infants that died before being baptized. I'm not sure if we should merge them away or look into it more and explain in the bio if indeed they represent unnamed children that died close to birth.
Good point. There must be something better than "Unknown" to identify infants that have died before being baptized. Or at least mention something in the biography text...
There should be some indication that it was a child that died. I use "Anonyme" for FC and Acadian babies, like the priest usually recorded.

I finished my own unsourced profiles and was happy to clear some Acadians on that list.  There are just a couple i could not find at all - any help would be appreciated.  Any suggestion for a good source in France would be helpful.  No rush.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Labauve-31

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Parenteau-33 (might never have come from France)

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dit_Gasnier_Gagne-1 (most certainly never came from France)
by Cindy Cooper G2G6 Pilot (329k points)
I did Labauve-31 for you. Can't help with the other two since they aren't Acadian.
Thank you!  I wish I had access to the Stephen White materials, I see that cited so often.
