What's the best way to go about severing this John Adams (of the _Fortune_, 1621) from the presidential line?

This is one heck of a complicated question. 1) There's no evidence for the parentage of this John (who's the same as my profile Adams-4457) that I know of; 2) there's no reliable evidence for the parentage of Henry of Braintree (e.g. Adams-8485) that I know of; 3) we would all like to be related to the presidents, which has created several different varieties of attempt to connect John of the Fortune with Henry of Braintree; 4) we're likely to have strong disagreement about whether to link parents for both John of the Fortune and Henry of Braintree.

What should we do? My proposal would be to unlink the parents from both, but most importantly I think it's important to sever John of the Fortune from Henry of Braintree's line, with a note, by eliminating any parents for him, in the absence of any evidence.

Roger's answer makes good sense.  In working on Mayflower people,  I am amazed at how many "undocumented" children some of these Pilgrims have.  I often detach them (by removing the parents) and add a note to the effect that I can't find enough evidence to support the connection.

I often add a section of the profile entitled "children" where I can provide more explanatory narrative than simply the links at the top of the profile.

For some, it has seemed helpful to add a section entitled "others claimed as children" at which I can list those who I have found to be claimed as children, why the claim has been made, if I know it, and  whether the claim is credible.   I provide a link to that child's profile.  Assuming it's not credible, I think feel free to remove that child from the links to children at the top of the page.  If that turns out to have been a mistake, there is still the link I created within the profile.  Assuming it was the right thing to do, the explanation in the profile should keep others from restoring the link.
