Is it possible for me to update my family tree then?
by anonymous G2G Crew (620 points)
I'm sorry, but the answer is NO - not during the source-a-thon if you are wanting to help your team.

You are free to go looking for family members and create new profiles, and find sources for them, but none of those new profiles will be counted towards the team total.

For the source-a-thon specifically, you cannot add new profiles to your tree just to source them for the source-a-thon. That is not permitted under the rules. Nor can you find sources for the 3 people you currently have as they do not have the unsourced template.
um. Updating your tree doesn't hinge on being in the Source-a-Thon. You can collaborate on existing profiles for your family now (you'll need to be on the trusted list, depending on privacy level & whether or not you've signed the Honor Code).

Or am I not understanding the question?

Hi again Maggie - should have "bibbed" you before :D  I was still catching up with the 5 of 6 G2G posts.

Here ya go - bib #445:

https://www.wikitree.com/images/source-a-thon/bibs/445.png

Thanks for joining the 2017 Source-a-Thon!

Hi here it's explained now exactly ;)

What Profiles count for the Source-a-Thon ?

In a related question.  What if you source a marked 'unsourced' profile, and then see that the remaining family members  ie. children or spouse are also unsourced - but are not 'tagged' as such.  I thought those counted, but maybe not?

Thanks
If they dont have the unsourced template then they wont be counted.

You can certainly make a note of their wiki ID numbers and come back and source them after the source-a-thon is over.

OR you can source then during the source-a-thon, knowing that those profiles will NOT be counted towards your team total.

Actually Robynne, I think they will count. See the discussion in the first of the following two G2G discussions:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/470614/what-profiles-count-as-unsourced-for-the-source-a-thon

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/470040/know-participate-source-thon-challenge-tracker-makes-easy

I included that second one 'cuz it has a link to a "how-to" video that's really helpful! Here's the line with the link -

P.S. Julie and Eowyn did a video walk-through of the above. Very nice.

Cheers, Liz

I would be willing to participate 8pm-10pm EST on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.  I'm specifically interested in Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri with German and Norwegian roots, but any challenge is a good challenge!

Hi Katy! You're bib #447:

Thanks for joining the 2017 Source-a-Thon!

Hi Katy, we cover Minnesota, Iowa and Missiouri over at Team Tornadoes. I also know from my family research experience that Minnesota should have some profiles with either Norweigian or German roots. I also already know of one profile already in Wisconsin that the person was born in Norway (it is actually one of my relatives and my profiles.)
Thanks, Amanda! I'd love to join Team Tornadoes!

I have not participated before but would like to now.  My great aunt, Helen Hall (Linenberger) a genealogist provided me with her research on my family, the Volga Germans who settled in Kansas, but there was an earlier immigration that settled in South Carolina that I am interested in knowing more about.  I live in South Carolina.  I also need to update my tree with information I received after my mother passed. Thanks.

Hello Source-a-thon organizers,

I'm fairly new to WikiTree but excited to get involved! It is my birthday weekend, so I won't have as much time as I was hoping, but I think I can commit a couple of solid hours in the evening on Monday(10/2) [Likely 6pm-10pm or so].

I think Team New York makes sense it is the region my family settled, but I'm also interested in Polish immigrants to the US.

Thanks!
