Are these the correct parents for George Hatherly (B. 1809/1810 in Devonshire, England)?

Alright. I'm wondering if a mistake is lingering somewhere or if this is correct.

My ancestor, George Hatherly, was born in September of 1809 or 1810 in Devonshire, England. He later moved to Ontario and then to Michigan, where he died.

- I found a baptismal record for a George Hatherly that was baptized in Shebbear in December of 1810. Parents noted as John and Margaret.

- I found the marriage record for John and Margaret and they were married in July of 1810. This would make Margaret already pregnant when they got married - is this a normal happenstance or perhaps a mistake somewhere in the transcriptions?

- George Hatherly's death record indicates his father is William, though a previous G2G conversation seemed to indicate this was likely a mistake and his father really was John, not William.

- I tried to see about going a further generation back from John and I found a potential baptismal record for one John Hatherly born in 1785 that had parents William and Elizabeth. Could be where "William" came from? I do not know.

Any help sorting this out is appreciated. I'm trying to see if I can go back another generation from John or if I perhaps have the wrong set of parents.

This is John/Margaret marriage record:

This is the birth/baptismal record for George:

Lots more sources for George linked on his profile.

The evidence would suggest that George Hatherly was born in 1810, rather than 1809 the son of John & Margaret, and that Margaret was pregnant on her marriage. It was not uncommon.

All the evidence would suggest was only called John, rather than John William, from both baptism (1785, Shebbear) & marriage records (1810 Shebbear). John would be the son of William Hatherly & Elizabeth. He appears to be the second of their four sons, the other three being William(1781, Shebbear), Richard (1787, Shebbear) & Richard (1790 Shebbear). There two daughters were Ann (1778 Shebbear) & Maria (1793 Shebbear). As to William & Elizabeth, records appear silent on their marriage. Frank has likely located William's death record.

Turning to John's wife, Margaret Edmonds, I would suggest she was the daughter of Edward Edmonds & Margaret, baptised 22 May 1791, Shebbear (

Of interest, George's sister Dorothy was baptised in  1813, with the surname Hatherley. Dorothy married 15 June 1831, Shebbear -John Bickle Matters (

Thank you for the great answer!

I was thinking the same thing, though I'd never come across an ancestor who had been obviously pregnant when married before.

I, too, could not find a definitive marriage record for a William and Elizabeth that would point to a potential marriage date. It does look like they were probably married around 1778 or so based on the birth years of the children.
