Richard Knowles born 16th February 1889 in Petone Wellington NZ he died 1939 Levin NZ his parents were John Edwin Knowles born May 1855 Leeds West Riding Yorkshire his Mother was a Mary Ann Brown now I have no idea when and where they were married whether it was in New Zealand or elsewhere. I do not know Mary Ann Browns age whether theirs was a second marriage for one of them or both.(maybe not married at all) I do know that when Richard went to the 1st World War she was listed as next to kin and was living in a boarding house in Hamilton for some reason or other, perhaps she had family there. I have visited the city and looked for records connected to her and have found nothing. I also have no idea when she died. I know there were other Knowles in New Zealand mainly the South Island and one of these was in the Army with Richard I don't know if they were cousins or had other relationships. There was also A John Knowles who enlisted from Masterton in the North Island was he a brother a cousin there was only unknown date of birth where he had worked and the date he died in 1818 of disease on the records. I am unsure if there was only one original Knowles family in New Zealand or several related but most of all I want to know who Mary Ann Brown really was and where she came from. Had she been a nursemaid minding Johns other children? a second wife or his only wife, had she been married previously, I really want to lay her to rest as a real person not just as another mystery Brown to add to the rest already on many branches of our tree.

Hi, Heather,  I suggest you add a few tags to your question to attract attention.  Possibly : Knowles, Brown, NZ, WWI

Those will help others with interest in the names and area find your question.
You might try a sideway search. There was a Diana Brown who married Edward William Knowles 1860 in NZ. Maybe sisters married brothers?
Thankyou I have been trying to find this wretched woman since 1986 and before I went on that search an uncle of my half brother who compiled a very good tree had been searching for about another 20 years. I have put notices on boards asked family members written letters and she still remains hiding.
