I have been told that I am a descendant Alexander Hamilton and don't know where to start looking or if this is true

Start with a piece of paper and a pen and your immediate relations and the person who told you. Write it all down. Then upload the info here and ask any relevant further questins.

As Sir William has said, start with what you know and work back towards what you do not know - yet. It is far easier to find parents of grandparents of someone than the other way around.

If you tried to work forward from Alexanders profile you would immediately be having problems as the profile shows no children or sources.

By adding your branch to wilkitree, with all the information you can find and list the sources of the information you will quite quickly get back a hundred years or more, and you may find cousins who are researching the same idea. You can then collaborate and build on your joint histories.

Though sometimes working forwards *in addition to* working backwards is helpful.  When I was trying to verify a family story that we were descended from a particular notable person, it was very helpful to find the notable person on some censuses and see that the ages of his children made it unlikely that my known ancestor was also his kid.  (He turned out to be a relative, but a third cousin several times removed rather than an ancestor.)

So far four descendants of his grand-son John Cornelius Adrian Hamilton have taken the Y-DNA test and have established a very definite fingerprint of his DNA. If you take the basic 37 marker test yourself that will establish beyond any doubt whether or not you are a direct male line descendant of his. At the time of writing the test is on special so save yourself a lot of time and do the test. Once you know your result then you can pursue the paper record, who knows you might closely match those who have already been tested and could be their cousin.
