If there's an internal category on HMS Dolphin you would use two regular brackets (uncapitalized).  Then write the word Category followed by a colon, two spaces then HMS Dolphin.  Then close it with two more regular brackets.   If, when showing the public view the HMS Dolphin is in red letters there either isn't a category for it or it's under a sub-category like Navy.  Then you will have the search the larger military category to see if there is one already.  If there is, then you will use two regular brackets, Category, colon, double space Navy comma HMS Dolphin, two regular brackets.

Interesting - a sailing sloop HMS Dolphin 1882.

She took part in the fleet review held at Spithead on 16 August 1902 for the coronation of King Edward VII. Seems probable Thomas could have been aboard.

See Wikipedia

Incidentally, if he is a private, would that mean he was a marine as opposed to RN.

There's a standard way of naming categories for warships used by the United Kingdom Project, it uses the same names as are used on Wikipedia, so HMS Dolphin (1882), rather than H.M.S. Dolphin. There are over 800 of these categories so far. I've changed your entry to match so that there is more chance of linking up with other crew members of the same ship.
