I'm hoping to find info for my Robinson ancestors, particularly Jacques James Robertson and Marie Trottier.

Jacques James Robertson was African and wife Marie Trottier was from Quebec.  They married, had a family and lived in Argenteuil, Quebec.  It's possible that he came from USA
In 1804, they were granted a parcel of land in St. Andre d'Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada by General James Patrick Murray.  The only census record for this ancestor is from 1825. His recorded age is 40 but not yet 60, very vague!  The birth year of Jacques James is somewhere between 1766 and 1785.

The sons of Jacques James and Marie are Joseph, Jean Baptiste, Francois, and Benjamin.  Two daughters were also born to these ancestors, Marguerite and Louise.  Marie Trottier is often referred to as "Femme du negre" or "wife of the negro".   Later census records describe the sons of Jacques "James" and Marie as coloured or mulatto.
Hi Donna,

My great great grandmother was from Lower Canada (Quebec) - her name was Margaret Robinson, also sometimes Marguerite. We think she may be one of Jacque/James' and Marie's children - she was born August 18, 1812. She was a woman of colour who married my great great grandfather - who was white, from possibly Lands End England - whom she apparently met in Montreal. They travelled to Port Hope, Ontario and were married and subsequently had 5 children, all born and raised in Ontario. Have you done any DNA work to try and trace your heritage. Our family has and it has been very informative. I'd be happy to fill you in...

These records are from much earlier than my ancestors were born.  It's difficult to know where they came from exactly, but were awarded a parcel of land in Quebec, Canada in 1804.  These Robinson/Robertson family and descendants are described as Negro or Mulatto.  There's a reference in a book that Jacques James Robertson had been freed.

Son, Joseph Robertsen or Robertson, appears to have been born in Quebec.

Thank you Frank, yes, that's their son.  I'm descended from Joseph Robertson and Marguerite Eugenie Villeneuve and have a good lot of the information on most of their descendants and all pertinent documents.
I just started on wikitree less than a week ago and haven't input all the information for everyone yet ( I have 4800 people to add!).  I don't have a lot on Joseph's siblings and descendants from their lines.
My main question is about Jacques James Robertson and Marie Trottier, I have her death date, an 1825 census record and that's about it.  Nothing about their marriage, where they came from, parents etc.  I have some tentative information on the Trottier family, but it's still a work in progress.
I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Jaques Robinson and Marie Trottier, they were married on September 16, 1801. I am a descendant
Jean Boudreau, if you do have a marriage certificate, then by all means please share it!
