Challenge of the week: Clean up as many locations as possible [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This week's challenge focuses on cleaning up the location fields on profiles.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that have potential errors in their locations. These are usually simple typos that are easy to fix. But a thinking genealogist needs to give them a quick "reality check" and consider the intent of the original member and the sources before making any changes. Will you try some?

After making a change, click the "challenge tracker" button and then the edit the status. This will record a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

For this challenge, using the status button is the only way your contributions count.  The tracker works for other challenges that don't have a cool status button :-)
Ok Emma.  Thank you!
Brenda,

Once your changes are saved, there is a green banner which appears. You should see a button to click which says "Challenges Tracker." Click that button. It should show you one or more options for possible changes, and you should also see a "status" button on the right side of the page. Click any of the status buttons. It will open another page which is called the Suggestion status. You have the option to show how you handled the changes, click any related boxes, and click "update status." That will record your changes for the competition.

Jamie
The tracker seems to not be updating again....10:30PDT Saturday
Jamie,

Neither of the choices for which challenge to credit appears (to me) to be the right one. Is there no way to go through the Custom Lists to do a particular state's errors and still get credit? Or is it possible to get to a state's errors through the challenge list? Not that I care to win, but participating in a group challenge adds to the fun.
None of the choices offered by the Challenge Tracker appears to be this challenge-- is it because I went via custom lists to find the Louisiana location errors?
Stephanie, we don't use the challenge tracker for the Data Doctor challenges because the Status button automatically tracks for us when we set the status after clearing errors.  When I mentioned the tracker wasn't working I meant the real-time results tracker that shows how many errors we have cleared.  Do you know how to set the status for errors using the status button?

It seems that the Real-time tracking results: See your stats

Has seems stop giving the stats alongside the participants. You need to check it out.

Oh! Now that you mention it I remember having read that a while back. I have been updating the status, thanks. The page of errors that I was working was not removing the profiles I'd done after setting the status and then refreshing the page, so I didn't know if that was affecting anything-- but I see my total showing on the stats page. Thanks for answering!
Stephanie, the system will only remove corrected profiles from your own personal suggestion list when the status is set.  It doesn't remove them from these suggestion lists until Aleš does the date dump at the beginning of the week. And you're welcome :-)

636 Bogus death location at

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/DBE_ErrorList_Challenge_17_Location

flags  "Y, Somme" in France as a bogus location.  However "Y" is an actual geographic place.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y,_Somme

What is the procedure for requesting that this not be shown as an error in this and other error reports?

Thanks and sincerely, Peter
by Peter Roberts G2G6 Pilot (702k points)
The problem is that 90%+ of the time, the "Y, Somme" is an error, based on a GEDCOM  upload.

If the "Y, Somme" location really IS correct for THIS person, mark it as a false error.
Please let me know the instructions showing how to mark it as a false error.  Thanks.
When you do the status each one may have unique items to pick. I used one that had USA too early but it gives you the idea. http://prntscr.com/gw7r90

Sorry Steven, Please be very specific because I don't understand the steps that connect me to the link you provided: http://prntscr.com/gw7r90

Step one.  I'm on the profile of the person who died in Y, Somme, France.  That page was believed to have an error, but it does not.

Step two: ?

Step three ?

What was it that told you it was an error?

Typically, if you scroll to the right, there should be a "status" button.

Click that.

One of the options is "False suggestion (hide forever)"

Select that, and leave a  comment saying that Y, Somme is correct.

Then click the "Update Status" button.
http://prntscr.com/gw7zc3  Is where the status bottun is. If you click status it takes you to that page to add a comment. False (hide forever) is one of the choices.
Hi Peter, I'm just linking this G2G post here about why over 90% of the Y, Somme death places are incorrect. It is an ancestry.com issue where a person types Y for yes they are dead and it auto corrects to Y, Somme, France.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/349236/why-somme-picardie-france-is-probably-bogus-death-location

You may know this, but it could be useful for other people as well.
Thank you Paula!

Does anyone feel like using the google doc I plugged the errors list into? It has a neat live chat feature if more than 1 person is there at once.

Real-time tracking status doesn't appear to be working correctly
by Cindi Clark G2G6 Mach 2 (20.5k points)
Can you explain what is not working?
Yes last night as I was  working on the challenge I checked my totals on the real time every couple of hours and about  1030 Eastern time I noticed that they had been changed from the last hour this morning when I started working on the challenge I looked when I started it was the same thing was last night and after I did  A few this morning I check them again and the number did not increase  whipple-1554
I've had the same number since Wednesday night or yesterday morning and I've added a few hundred more.  No one's number has increased.
It is back. Just the report part stopped updating scores. Now it does again.

It seems that the Real-time tracking results: See your stats

Dang! I just did 54 data error corrections, many concerning locations, before I thought to see what the challenge was this week.  Still displaced and dealing with repairs to my flooded house (3 weeks almost now, but probably 3 or 4 more to go).  I'll try to work on some today while I have access to my fella's laptop.
by Carolyn Martin G2G6 Pilot (283k points)
Just did 2 new ones but they are not being recorded as part of the challenge.  What am I doing wrong?
The real-time tracker hasn't been working since yesterday, Carolyn so no worries.  Nice to see you back :-)

Go Roses!
