1st white woman to cross the Allegheny Mts, died at age 107, married to Colonel James Stewart

Kingsville "A Stroll through time"
James Stewart a son of a Scottish colonel who fought in the British Army at Bunker Hill, arrived in Gosfield merely by chance. Following their father's war service, his family settled in Greer County, Penn. During an Indian raid, the youths James and John witnessed the scalping death of their father. Following their own capture by the Shawnee Indians, the youths were traded to Wyandots who adopted them into the tribe and brought them to Malden Township. Seven years after their capture, Mrs Stewart received a tip that John was alive and set out alone on horseback to search for him. She found John near Batavia Ohio. At a later date, Mrs Stewart and her son John traveled to Malden to try and find James. They learned that he had already settled along Cedar Creek in the "New settlement." After a joyous reunion, Mrs Stewart and John returned to Penn. Eventually, many of the family came to Gosfield and settled here where their lives became entwined with the Augustine family. Mrs Stewart died in Canada at the age of 107 years.
