My great grandmother was Sylvia Jane Thomas, and I have had some DNA work done. She is my mother's maternal grandmother and her mtDNA is most likely H6a1b2. Sylvia Jane Thomas's 7th great grandmother is Elizabeth Hobson who was born in Norfolk, England on December 19, 1564 at Norfolk, England. She married in 1585 in Hingham, Norfolk, England in 1585 and did there on April 11, 1602.
Do you know of a connection to the Mayflower?
I had Ancestry test test my DNA and have noted I have 7 pages X 50=350 matches for the surname Thomas.

It may be worthwhile having Ancestry test your DNA.

Have you uploaded your Raw Data to www.gedmatch as yet, if not I recommend you do so , it is completely free.

They compare your DNA to the data bases of many other companies that test DNA, this is likely to result in a lot more matches for you.

It takes Gedmatch several days to massage your data into a format they can work with so wait a few days then come up on their web site, log in and do a One to Many test.

This will reveal your closest matches, plus their email address and you can write to them.

My husband's paternal grandmother was a Thomas. Her father is a brick wall and a Black Sheep. My husband Salsbery-3 has done Y-dna testing at FTDNA and autosomal at Ancestry. He is also at Gedmatch.

I  have a Thomas family in Wheeling West Virginia in the mid-late 1800's and I have a DNA profile at Gedmatch but i don't know where the line goes back to the old world (Wheeling Virginia eventually became Wheeling West Virginia (a new state).

Jane Frances Thomas

1857–1924

BIRTH 12 OCT 1857 • Wheeling, Ohio County, Virginia, USA

DEATH 14 JUL 1924 • Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA

2nd great-grandmother

This is not my MtDNA lineage. My MtDNA haplogroup appears to be U (possibly U2): A319844

I have had most DNA Test offered by FTDNA including the BigY DNA Test. My Great Grandfather was John A Thomas born about 1830 in NC. He was a wagondriver moved to Horry County, SC met and married my great grandmother Mary Anne Dusenbury. Mary Anne was born in Columbus County, NC she and her family moved to Horry County as well.

I have been unable to find any info on John.

Hi Shirley, thanks for your question.

From the Thomas Name Study perspective, it would be great to develop the DNA aspects of the study. It is an area outside my competency or expertise without quite a bit of work. However, if there is anyone who thinks they could help out in this area, Dale and I would be delighted! If you post a message to the Thomas Name Study Project page  at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Thomas_Name_Study

we can discuss it further. Thanks in anticipation!
