The short answer is that his father's name was Alexander Maitland Stewart, so it came from his father! And HIS father's name was James Maitland Stewart. I don't see Maitland before that, not in the male line, nor a maiden name in the maternal line. In the end, it's a mystery!

My response to this question for you Anonymous is that if you want to find the answer to the question as to the second given name of Maitland, there will be a possibility that it may take many years to find the answer.  There will be an answer and the mystery will be solved through persistent research.   Parents in the day just didn’t choose a name like Maitland unless it is a family surname ( most likely) or the surname of an important individual of the time and given in honour. (not  common)  You may have looked through this wiki page which gives you excellent background of the medieval name.

The earliest public record of the surname in Britain, after the Battle Abbey roll of 1066, dates to 1138 in Northumberland when Robert Maltalent witnessed a charter of Roger de Mowbray in Yorkshire.

The Clan Maitland  is a lowland Scottish Clan

I see that Maitland was a family name handed down for several generations.  Why the first Stewart is named Maitland is where the question lies that needs to be answered.

In my own family, I have a name Thora....William Thora Turner b. 1820's in SC/GA.....where in the world did that name come from????? Four generations later my Daddy was William's name sake, and was graced with that same name William Thora Turner.  Told him I would find out  where that name came from before he died in 2010, maybe someone can help me on that also.

We just keep finding mysteries as we continue on family history.  Good luck on your Maitland.  I have two elderly friends who names are Maitland in my county, only two people I had ever heard of that had that name.  They are close tot he same age, might find an answer for you when I get the chance to talk with one of them.
