Request

BOT function to add an Infobox to all categories missing it

Purpose: To get a consistent look of all categories in a category tree

I would like to add {{Space:SGC_Header}}

to all children not having it of Category=Det_gamla_bondesamhället ==> has +300 subcategories

To have this done by bot when there is no agreement about the design of the header is just outrageous.

WikiTree should take a cue from Wikipedia and keep the headers for category pages clean and minimalistic.

The headers you, Magnus, have produced for Sweden categories seem like an attempt to emulate the infoboxes used on pages in Wikipedia, where they don't push down the main content of the page below the infobox the way it does on a category page. The current category headers cause a lot of extra scrolling for the user doing actual genealogy with the categories as a tool. OK on one page, perhaps, but ergonomically it all adds up destructively.

A template is used to get consistent look and feel and easy to administrate categories.... Having the parish structure without templates would have made it impossible to change names as easy as was done when we realized a category shouldn't contain the character "/" we changed 25 files instead of 2500.....

What content the template should contain you can define or get an agreement what it should contain....

  1. The simplest template is empty
  2. A template could add a category like [[Category:Swedish Genealogy Lexicon]] or [[Category:Parishes,_Sweden]]
  3. A template could add an infobox telling what project is part of
    1. add The Category Structure
    2. add What links here
    3. add who to contact
    4. add how to ask questions in G2G and what Tag to use
    5. ....
  4. If size is a problem/priority  compress all stuff or add nothing or use smaller font or change screen resolution ;-)
  5. ....

Right now I feel its just chaos some people add templates and some delete.... so the template is not the problem it is the lack of direction and some basic vision what is wanted and also how this should be done....

Checking the Swedish structure it still has 26 "circular" categories that feels like an indication of a bigger basic problem than having an empty template on a category....  ;-)

Templates are very convenient in order to get a new subcategory fitted into the correct parent categories, and also for disambiguating.

If a project stamp on categories is needed at all levels, this should presumably also be done through a template. Something displaying in a similar size as the project boxes for profiles would be appropriate for a category page, possibly utilizing more of the width.

Content templates like the SPC templates are not approved:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Template_Guidelines#Not_approved:_Content_templates

Transclude content is Why you should use templates. Better see what Aleš is doing with the Ancestry template and the FindAGrave template with the new sameas parameter makes it possible to tell Project Database error dont generate errors....

Because of Aleš work it makes even more sense to use ätemplates much more Even when he has a bot that can do a lot. Problem with the bot approach is changing Ancestry bad links will take +3 weeks and with a template it takes 3 sec... one problem is Gedcom export but I feel as Wikitree lack events etc  you have already lost so much by importing so one more thing is a small thing  also what we speak about now is categories an not profiles

As we dont know what is happening with Swedish Churchbooks and that if they will be free. My hope is that it will happen and then I guess we will have another situation were we see how stupid it is not transclude content

But do what you want I feel complexity is something that should try to be avoided and check with Aleš if you have questions I feel he is the person with best wiki skills and understanding how to create a solution that is possible to manage...

I am out travelling but have said before that I can do a webhangout and train people how a template works its nothing more than a text substitute....

PS. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:CategoryInfoBox is Even more complex and use configuration compared to the SPC templates and is as I see it the only way to get some structure in the category project. And if Wikitree get  a CategoryInfo template it will be very easy to change in SPC_Header to use it... I guess all the other categories in the Sweden project will need some more work.

Then I assume you agree that all sub categories in a category tree should have a template = my intial request

As you add subcategories to parishes any thoughts how to do those more userfriendly. I guess most people has no relation to Category:Gärdebyn,_Rättvik_(W) so Even if you find a profile on Wikitree with a person with this category you still has problems how to continue or were to ask questions....

Today with no text or template you dont Even have a link to the category browser or a link to Gärdebylåten or WhatLinksThere or a link to DM {{Space:DM|Gärdebyn}} or more info or listen to dialects from the area one thing which I think is odd that Wikitree doesnt have a Coord template to add coordinates —> you get a map link to the location for Gärdebyn

Magnus, as you may noticed, I am preparing CategoryInfoBox temlates for categories. Here is the status of what I have done.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:CategoryInfoBox

I didn't do one for locations. I could do that next.

I think Sweden categories should be brought to same look. I can help you with that.

Which templates do you use?

We can continue this on chat.

No problem

My plan is to have that CategoryInfoBox "inside" {{Space:SGC_Header}} and inside {{Space:SPC_Header}}

The important thing is that every one has it....

  1. I add categories also in the Space page
  2. Additional (maybe temporary) tools like
    1. Space:Category
    2. Space:WhatLinksHere
  3. Always better to have a template as above just at one place i.e. inside {{Space:SPC_Header}} following the DRY rule
Aleš, you may want to make the cell borders in the CategoryInfoBox a much lighter shade of gray. You don't want the borders to look as if they are more important than the text within the cells.
This is all very early design. For now I am dealing with content of the infobox.

I changed it. Is it better?

Aleš the structure with templates for different counties and one "base template" used for the Swedish Parish Categories see description
