Correct Spelling to trace family

How do you know which name spelling is correct in Francs?  Callais or Callis.

Family story is second a added in America?

Yvonne, the name may differ for different members of the family. For each individual you should search for the birth record or baptism record. You then enter a profile for them using the Last Name At Birth. If the spelling changes during their lifetime, e.g., if they emigrate, then you can also add the new variant under Current Last Name.

Callais is certainly much more common in France than Callis. But Calais with a single l (like the city) is even more common, so if a letter was added it is more likely the second l.

Do you have any more information, like: first names, when they emigrated, what place they came from?
