Hello Connectors!

Beginning with this Challenge, the Connectors will begin on the 15th of every month instead of every other month. Also, the Challenge WILL NOT be using the Challenge Tracker. So let's begin another month of connecting the unconnected across WikiTree. We'll get the project page updated soon with last month's tallies, but for now, it's time to start connecting!

"Long" September's top connector was  with  connections.

Thanks to all of you who participated the "Long" Sepember Connectors Challenge. If you haven't checked out the Connectors Chat page, you should! There is a lot of chatter there about what everyone is working on.

Now on to the Connectors Challenge Rules:

  1. Pick any WikiTree profile which is not connected to the main tree. (In other words, that profile does not have a box at the bottom of the page, showing the degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon and Queen Elizabeth II.) You can look for unconnected profiles using the Unconnected People tool, the Unconnected Profiles category, the Unlinked_Profiles category, or you may run across an unconnected profile in the regular course of your research.

  2. Either add a new profile for a first degree relative (parent, spouse, sibling, or child) of the person on that profile as a link toward a connected profile, or else connect an existing profile on WikiTree to the profile you're working on.

  3. Add a source to the profiles involved in the connection showing the relationship between the two profiles. This could be a census record listing a family, a marriage record, a death record listing the spouse and/or parents, a birth record listing the parents, or any source which demonstrates that the two profiles should be connected to one another. Your source needs to be cited as closely to the style recommended on our Sources help page as possible to count towards your tally.

  4. If you are adding a new profile, add a second, independent source for that profile. (For example, if you add a spouse because of a marriage record, then look for a birth or death record for the spouse you're adding.) (Note: The reason for this rule isn't to discourage you from adding people. But as you have probably already learned, even official documents frequently misspell names, so adding an independent confirmation of the name helps to save other researchers time in trying to find records that don't exist, because the person's real name was not the same as showed up in the linking document.)

  5. Answer this post, creating a numbered list, and including the two profiles and the kind of source you used to make the connection. (For example: "1. Smith-123 added as spouse of Jones-456, Anytown VR) You only need to reply once. As you make more connections, just edit your post to add your new connections. REMEMBER - The Challenge Tracker will not be used.

  6. If you connect a profile which completes a connection trail either for an isolated profile or an unconnected tree, please add "Connected!" at the end of the line which made the connection. We count those connecteds towards your tally.

  7. The tally is of branches/unconnected profiles connected to the WikiTree tree, not sources or profiles added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better, and sometimes a connection will take a number of profiles to get added. Every one is different, and each one makes our tree better. So, in short, we'll count each "connected!" we see.

  8. If either or both profiles you connect did not have good sources before and were already on WikiTree, then you can also count those sources towards the Sourcerers Challenge.

  9. All participants who do not already have a Connectors Project badge, will get one. Winners each month-the person with the most connections made to the tree-will get the Connection Challenge Winner badge, and the Top Connector each month with get a spiffy template to wear on their profile page. Stats will be kept on the Connectors Challenge page, just like we do for the Sourcerers Challenge.

See last month's challenge as an example. Ask questions in the comments section here. Thank you!

This might be of interest to the challenge.

I added a few keywords to WikiTree+ Search, that you can use.

  • unconnected That means that profile is unconnected. It is on 5.544.231 profiles
  • unlinked That means that profile has no connections. It is on 2.709.301 profiles
  • connected Profiles that are connected to global tree. It is on 9.761.073 profiles
  • privatetree Profiles that are connected to global tree through private connections. It is on 538.034 profiles
  • treexx to show all profiles on one unconnected small tree. This will be used on internal links.

This keywords will enable you to search for any unconnected profiles.

Examples: (Click Get profiles on displayed page)

You can try almost any combination of words.

This is biggest unconnected group of people at the moment. It has 3744 profiles, that can be connected at once.

http://wikitree.sdms.si/default.htm?report=srch1&Query=tree7&MaxProfiles=5000
i'm confused as too how this connection thing works. for example, the find unconnected profiles managed by me tool, one of the profiles listed here:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Martinez-3073 , is distantly related to me, and since my profile is connected, shouldn't that make Martinez-3073 a connected profile as well?
I think you should wait for a day. Tree is recalculated once a day and tomorrow it should be connected.

On WikiTree+ it is recalculated once a week based on sunday's dump, so there connection will be visible next week.
Connection is now showing.
hopefully it will disappear from my unconnected profiles soon and my mrca with ylario are agustin ceballos and rita gertrudis bermudes
Interesting!

Time to have another go at this Challenge, I'm sorry that I don't get around to taking part each month, but thank you Bob for continuing to host it. It is very much appreciated.

Completing this connection means that I've found a new 9th cousin. (This connection is for one of my family names and connects about 16 profiles to the global tree).

4. Started with Edward South Naldrett, Connected!!  sources birth, 1911 census, passenger lists and electoral roll

It was lovely to work with profiles from Sussex, my favourite county. This connection was taken from the Connectors Chat list of the biggest unconnected branches (a list that Aleš prepares for us), and connects 726 profiles to the global tree.

5. Started with Noah Harley Connected!!  and his wife Alice Maud Bowman, source 1901/1911 census and 1939 register

Connected her to her first husband, (existing connected profile) of Harry Griffin

(Our son married into this family during 2017, so it's been good to start working on his in-laws, it connects 32 profiles to the global tree)

I wish we could count the additional profiles that get connected as a result of just one connection.
I agree Bob, that would certainly boost our numbers. It might also inspire other connectors to concentrate on the really large unconnected branches that are still waiting to be joined to our global tree. There are still quite a lot of branches that are well over 100 profiles (these can be found listed on the 'Connectors Chat' free space page), so clearing some of them would be quite an achievement.
Actually, it was my original intention to count the number of profiles, rather than the number of branches, connected, so that somebody who connected one of the big unconnected branches would get more points than somebody who connected a single isolated profiles. But we started this challenge in the days before Aleš's work in identifying and tallying unconnected branches, so there wasn't any reliable way to tell how large a branch somebody was starting from. I suppose that, with Aleš's tools in place now, we could alter the scoring system, but it would only be fair to note that at the beginning of a new challenge, rather than in the middle of one.

Continued from above

6. Started with Charles Hare, Connected!! added his wife Lily Vickerman sources marriage, 1939 register, death
Added her parents Edward Vickerman and Elizabeth Rice Munby, sources baptism 1871/1881/1901/1911 census, marriage, burial, probate
Connected Edward to his father (existing profile) Robert Vickerman, and created a profile for his mother Elizabeth Walker source baptism, marriage, 1851/1871/1881 census, burial and probate

(This connection was taken from the 100+list and connects about 129 profiles to the global tree).

7. Started with William and Samuel Beresford, Connected!! added their parents Charles Beresford and Mary Ann Garnett source birth and death registration (which both show parents name)
Connected Charles and Mary Ann to their son (existing connected profile) Walter Beresford source birth and death registration

(This connection was taken from the 100+list and connects about 107 profiles to the global tree).

8. Started with Hedwig Bischoff, Connected!! Augusta Bischoff and Will Bischoff, connected them to their parents August Bischoff and Emelia Glazner source birth and 1900 census
Connected August and Emelia to their son (existing connected profile) John Wesley Bischoff

(connects 5 profiles to the global tree)

9. Started with Matthew Frohe, Connected!! added his father Gottfried Frohe, (already mentioned in bio) source 1870/75/80 census and FAG
Connected Gottfried to his son (existing connected profile) Godfrey M Frohe source 1870/75/80 census

(Connects about 23 profiles to the global tree)

10. Started with Elisha Quincy Adams, Connected!! added his wife Eugenia Concordia von Rosenberg source 1870/1880/1900/1910/1920 census, marriage and FAG
Added her father Carl Eugen von Rosenberg source 1860/1870/1880 census and FAG
Added his son Alexander Eugen von Rosenberg source 1860/1870/1900/1910 census, marriage and FAG
Added Emma Weyand as the wife of Alexander, source marriage and 1900/1910 census
Connected Alexander and Emma to their son (existing connected profile) Max Alexander von Rosenberg source 1900/1910 census

(connects about 20 profiles to the global tree)

11. Started with Millton Layfayette Bolding and Madison Clarke Bolding, both Connected!!connected them to their parents (existing profiles) John Porter Bolding (Bolling) and Lucretia Warnock source 1850/1860/1870/1880 census and FAG.

(connects about 19 profiles to the global tree)

12. Bob suggested that I try the tracker, as it is now in place. Wasn't sure if I was meant to add everybody in the 'chain' or just the profiles that I connected, but I chose the latter. So I've added William Weyand, John Weyand and Christina Weyand to the tracker as three profiles that should connect. They were actually all connected together through their spouses as they married three siblings, so this connection should only count as one.
(They connect about 41 profiles to the global tree)

13. Added to the tracker, Mary Ellen Austin connected to her husband Arthur Kennedy Rideout

(this connects one profile to the global tree, Mary's brother Alfred Austin, who was Poet Laureate in 1896)

14. Added to the tracker, Francis Mount Durnford connected to his parents Francis Edward Durnford and Frances Thompson

(connects about 54 profiles to the global tree)

15. (Not added to tracker, as I don't know how)
Proposed a merge for Caroline de Winton Connected!!  and (de Winton-105), merge completed by profile manager and tidied by me

(connects 10 profiles to the global tree)

16. Added to the tracker, Frederick Linse, connected to his daughter Louisa Linse (existing profile)

(connects 100 profiles to the global tree)

17. Added to the tracker, Julia Cecilia Collinson, connected to her parents John Collinson and Amelia King (existing profiles)

(connects 3 profiles to the global tree)

18. Added to the tracker, Richard King and Frances Elizabeth Bernard, connected to their daughter Amelia King (existing profile)

(connects 1 profile to the global tree, Sir Francis Bernard, Governor of the province of Massachusetts Bay, 1760-1769)

19. Added to the tracker Ralph Whitbread, connected to his wife Mary Ann Tompsett
(the profile manager has 253 profiles on their watchlist, I think this connection will link them all to the global tree)

This is the last connection that I'll make for this challenge, total connected is approximately 1,751 profiles. Total number of connections is 19. (Including those added to the tracker) Am looking forward to using the tracker in earnest next month, hopefully I'll be able to understand how it actually works.

Great work Carol!  That's a huge number of connected profiles.

Greg, each 'chain' of linked profiles only count as one connection.
So you started with Thomas Graves (unconnected)
You created his son Thomas North Graves
You created his wife Mary Paget
Then you linked her to her parents, existing connected profiles Henry Bayly Paget and his wife Jane

Hope this makes sense.
Looking back right to the first challenge, I see that I worded it in such a way that your interpretation is certainly reasonable, although I (and others) have been counting each connection step, rather than each branch connected, for all that time. Reading it your way, I'll have to adjust all my scores and give back my Connectors Challenge Winner badge from last year.
Last month I needed 16 steps to connect Denis Diderot and 12 to connect Nicolas Sarkozy and I counted them for 1 point each. I"ve been doing that all the time. Actually my scores being so measly compared to others are just what kept me away from the challenge.
I've only ever counted branches as well Isabelle, I guess if the scoring ever gets automated then we'd all be counting connections in the same way. Rule no. 7, at the top of this post shows 'The tally is of branches', so I'm fairly sure our interpretation is correct, but I can see how it can be a bit misleading.

Hi, I am new at this, but I wanted to start somewhere. I took Edward Lovelace, Sr., https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lovelace-51 and was trying to connect him with other Lovelaces, but had a happy surprise when I was able to connect him to his mother, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barksdale-251. Thanks for getting me started, Alexis Lovelace Nelson,https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lovelace-587

Glad to have you with us, and happy you were able make that first connection. Feels good doesn't it.
Thank you Bob for all the work you do. I thought I would paint in my later years, but I find that I enjoy writing biographies. I do love WikiTree, and it does feel good to help make connections.

I have been very busy this week so I am going to add the following

I have connected up The Cullen Bain family in NZ - through the mother. The Cullen Bain family profiles were already on wikitree, but orphaned. So I just adopted them in order to connect them up, through Margaret Cullen's family.

Margaret Cullen - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cullen-1100

In one of the worst murder cases in NZ history, Margaret cullen, her estranged husband Robin Bain and 3 of their 4 children were all murdered on the morning of 20 June 1994. The 4th and surviving child, was out delivering newspapers at that time. He was later arrested for killing on his family on circumstantial evidence. His lawyers appealed for another trial which he went through and from which he was acquitted of the charges and all charges were dropped. The surviving son has since changed his name, gotten married and lives quietly somewhere in NZ.

1 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Monk-1444 - Margaret Cullen Bain's mother

2 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clearwater-116 - Margaret Monk's mother

3 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clearwater-105 - Margaret Clearwaters father

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clearwater-62 - Margaret Clearwaters Brother who was already on the tree - I had to create the father in order to connect these siblings

I have also connected up The TV Actress Michael Learned - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-201 (Already on Wikitree but was NOT connected)

4 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-356

5 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-355

6 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-354

7 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-353

8 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-352

9 - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-351

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Learned-118 - This Ancestor was already connected

Michael's connection should go through tonight. I also discovered that Michael Learned's son was married to Helen Reddy's daughter so I have done Helen Reddy's family as well - but I cant count them since I created all of their profiles.

Having a go at this.

1. Connected Robert Jordan as child for John Jordan. ''Connected''

2. Connected  Molly (Lusk) Hutchinson as child for Hugh Lusk. ''Connected''. (This connected a ''Notable profile'' of Alfred Averill CMG to the global tree.

3. proposed a merge of Southee-5 (connected) and Southee-28 (unconnected). Now ''Connected''

c. proposed a merge of Brett-726 (unconnected) and Brett-393 (unconnected)

I have made a few connections using the tracker. Is there a way to find what I have already done and add it here?

Also, does it count when you import trees?

Julie,

The Connector Tracker is at: http://wikitree.sdms.si/function/WTChallengesScores/Scores.htm?code=ConnectorsChallenge&Type=5  . It isn't necessary for you to add profiles from the Tracker to this post. Posted connections and Tracker connections will both count towards an individual's tally. There are some Connector's that don't like the Tracker, so posted connections will still be used for totals. This Challenge will be an equal counter, with posted being tracked as well as Tracker. The only requirement will be that all participants answer the Challenge post. With no postings, the Tracker will be used. Clear as mud? Read the next posting for the Nov/Dec Challenge carefully.

Here is my contribution for this month (it will probably be only one, but I mean to show it off):

  1. Emile Zola: I started at Jérémie Risler and Anne-Catherine Mieg. Added Mathieu Risler, their son (marriage and death records), and his wife, Judith Dollfus; to  their daughter, Henriette Risler (birth and marriage records), and her husband, Teodor Brylinski; to their son, Théodore Jérémie Brylinski (birth and marriage records), and his wife, Anna Fanny Lauth; to their son, Roger Brylinski (birth and death records), and his wife, Fanny Scheurer: to their son, Jacques Brylinski (birth and marriage records); to his wife, Aline Le Blond (marriage record); to her mother, Denise Emile-Zola. Denise was Emile Zola's daughter with Jeanne Rozerot - Connected !!

Well done Isabelle, I know you love working with 'Notables'. I think this connection would have taken quite a considerable amount of time and effort.
Thank you Carol. It is lucky that there were all these existing profiles in the Riesler/Mieg/Dollfus family group (I used their cousins to connect Aragon a few weeks ago). All in all not such a difficult connection for a French without aristocratic connections.

I have been doing some on the side and is it to late to sign up and also get counted on the tracker the ones I have done also doing this time. I am in. Can you use the tracker instead of coming here and being counted this way.
