Saturday Sourcing Sprint! (21 October 2017)

Hi WikiTreers!

imageJoin in on this week's 24-hour Saturday Sourcing Sprint!

It's basically a casual mini Source-a-Thon.

When it's Saturday where you are, get sourcing!
(And quit when it's Sunday :D )

You only need to answer the post once in this thread, including your team name and time zone (GMT standard). We have decided to use the Challenge Tracker to record the profiles we sources. You can continue commenting in your answer regarding successes, discrepancies, stories that tug at your heart strings, and new amazing sources. We also have a Google Hangout if you'd like to join us. It will be as busy or quiet as we make it.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced - you cannot create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the profiles already on WikiTree which need sources. Other great ways to find unsourced profiles are to check out orphaned profiles and use the Unsourced by Country lists which Aleš prepares for us..

*Remember, your sources need to be as full and specific as possible, so others find them useful. That means, if the source is online, you should link to it. If it is a page from a book, the page number should be included so others can easily see where you found the reference.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better. When you save the profile, a green bar will appear at the top. Click the Challenge Tracker button, add or verify your WikiTreeID, select a pre-defined comment or add your own to indicate which type(s) of source(s) you added, put a check mark in the "Saturday Sourcing Sprint" box, and click "Add Action." If you participate in the Monthly Sourcerers' Challenge you can click both boxes.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like == Research Notes == giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start. These don't count toward your total but will help improve our shared WikiTree overall!

* If the only source on a profile is "Ancestry tree," "Geni.com," Ancestry search results page, "Pedigree Resource Files" from FamilySearch, and the like, it does count as unsourced.  Add some sources to it and include the profile in your tally. Likewise, in no way is adding one of those or comparable things an acceptable source. If one of those is added, it should go in a == Research Notes == section and the template should stay or be added.

* If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already sourced profile, that counts too. You still found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. To get to the Challenge Tracker for these, clean up the merged profile and then click the Challenge Tracker.

The Sprint tracking page will be updated after the sprint is over. Once that is done, a best answer will be awarded to the Sprinter who sources the most profiles and, if it is the first time winning, the Saturday Sourcing Sprints Winner badge will be awarded. You can track your progress on the Challenge Tracker report.

We had 13 official Sprinters and 11 additional unregistered members who used the Challenge Tracker. All together, we sourced a grand total of 411 profiles.

John Noel was our winner this week with 152 profiles sourced. Outstanding!

See you all next week.

Good to see you this week, John. You getting a jump on Saturday?
Hi Debi, I started when my contributions went to the next day, 8 pm last night. Was that wrong? If so please take off 31 and I'll just add them to the monthly count. I also forgot to use the tracker. My count on the monthly tracker is all missed up, because I would forget about it, so I would just keep track this way.

Hello, I did end up using the Challenge Tracker after all.

Hi, Gwen, welcome to the Sprints! You're welcome to add your profiles here or you can use the Challenge Tracker link that comes up after you save.

Which time zone are you in? Are you a member of a challenge team or sourcing as an independent?
EST and I'll stick with team MA

I will keep working on North America, Canada and particularly Ontario unsourced. Still a Maple Leaf :)

I have found a cluster of Usourced Pilchers that I am working on. Most of them did NOT have the "Unsourced" tag.

I was on the Musty Dusty (pre 1500) team, but these are 1700 and later.

Using the challenge tracker.
by Janet Gunn G2G6 Pilot (158k points)
Hi Janet, great to see you here. I ran in to one of those kinds of families also without the template. They all count during the Sprints. I don't think your fellow Musty Dustys will hold it against you for working more recent profiles *grin*
It wasn't until I was updating the Sprint totals that I realized this was your first Sprint. As we figure out how best to use the Tracker, one of the things Aleš has suggested is tracking by time zone. Would you share your time zone with us?
I am in Virginia, USA- EDT

I notice that the Tracker does not allow us to count profiles when there is anything in the source space.  I sourced a few where the only source was "Ancestry.com" (didn't even specify the specific Ancestry tree), the GEDCOM import file, and a note saying someone would source by a specific date.  I don't care about the stats for today's sprint, but I suggest that this should be modified for future tracking.
by Star Kline G2G6 Pilot (720k points)
Thanks for the heads up, Start. When you say doesn't allow, do you mean that the Saturday Sprint check box isn't there at all or that it says that entry doesn't qualify? If the check box is there, those which "don't qualify" will be added to the Unsourced Other column and be included in your grand total.

As far as I have heard (and I'll verify), the two right hand columns and the "don't qualify" message are left over from the Source-A-Thon way of tracking. We are following our usual rules but using the tracker designed for them. I only look at the totals when I'm checking stats.
Whoa, don't type when the brain, fingers, and eyes are tired. Two out of three I can usually work with. So Sorry, Star, I really do know how to spell your name!

Working on Pattersons in New Brunswick
by Joe Patterson G2G6 Mach 1 (15.1k points)
Hi Joe. The Saturday Sourcing Sprint is over for this week. We will start again next week. I hope you'll join us next week. Sourcing the Pattersons of New Brunswick sounds like an excellent project.

I usually post the thread around noon on Friday so that our Kiwi members can start at 12am Saturday. It takes about 48 hours for the whole globe to get a chance. We end at noon on Sunday to let those on the east side of the date line their full 24 hours.
Not a problem, I try to update all of my 'Unsourced' entries anyways and did not realize (or pay attention) that there was a category for that.

Add me in, probably a bit late for this week, but I'll see how I go in a couple of weeks (out of town next Saturday for my birthday weekend).
by Raewyn Vincent G2G6 Mach 7 (77.6k points)
I'll get you on the list, Raewyn. We're tweaking the Challenge Tracker and time zones are helpful. Would you share yours? Happy early birthday! Enjoy your holiday.
Thanks! I'm Central Daylight Savings time - at least until whenever we 'fall back'.

Thanks, Debi - new link worked!  Glad figured out before this Saturday!

I was on Team New York, if same teams as this year's Source-a-thon?  While my ancestors from NY, I live in California, so Pacific time zone.
by Nancy Schlegel G2G2 (3.0k points)
edited by Nancy Schlegel
Oh excellent! I have no idea why things were wonky but I'm glad you were finally able to get here. I'll get you added to the tracking sheet this morning.

Sourcerers tend to stay with a team once they join, though there is definitely no requirement to do so. If you participate in the Spring Clean-a-Thon, which is based on specific errors, you'll have the option of sticking with Team New York or working with a team which focuses on a specific error which is what I do. If you go that route, both team names can be reflected in your tracking sheet entry.
