Looking for male toddler adopted, perhaps informally, by Schindlers of Osage Co. Missouri in 1888?

Immediately following my great-grandfather's suicide in 1888, his 2 young children were for some reason taken from his then pregnant widow Maria (Carrol) Kleb. This occurred in Gasconade Co. Missouri, a tight knit German community. Little Rosa was taken by neighbors as was the new baby daughter, my grandmother, Kleb-3, Emma. The toddler son was taken by visiting friends, the Schindlers, of Osage Co. Missouri, according to a Hermanner Volksblatt article, from June 1888. However, I've been unable to locate the family in Osage, Mo. censuses. His name was most likely John.
