Birth Registration, NSW 4713/1818V18184713 1B ; John Cross ; Mother: Jane  Cross.

Death Registration, NSW9271/1883 ; John Horsley ; F= John ; M=Jane ; Molong, NSW.

Wikitree IDs: 'Cross-3203' and 'Horsley-624'Cross

John lived as Cross from 1818 to 1834. Upon the death of his father he adopted and used thereafter the surname Horsley. He had 7 siblings who were all in the same position. Do I Merge him as a Cross or a Horsley?

The two profiles you have given are not the same person. One is John (Cross) Horsely, Jr and the other is Ella Tyler Horsley. The correct way to enter an adoptee is using the name he/she was born with in the LNAB field and the adoptive name in the current last name field for a man and either the current last name or the other last names field for a woman depending on the circumstances.

I did search for matches on John but didn't find any. If there is a second profile with the LNAB as Horsley it should be merged into the Cross profile.

Ah, yes,  I see now. It also looks like there are two profiles for the mother as well. Was her LNAB Cross or Jackson? Also, Horsley should be removed as his father if he isn't biological.
Thank you all, Dennis, Deb and C, Mackinnon, for your help on this  question and your joint tolerance of my '642' booboo.. I hope to proceed now on merging the Jane (Jackson) Cross duplication, as profile manager John Spencer has kindly added me to the Trusted List. For completeness here, John Horsley was the biological  father of John Jr.
