Never heard of moonshiners bootlegging. I think bootlegging was more of an urban practice.
Bootlegging was practiced everywhere, whether Urban, Suburban, in the Country or Hills. My Uncle had a receiver for the liquor he ran, who bootlegged it out to the public. I was just wondering if any one had any bootleggers in their tree.

Thanks Frank! i really appreciated the info. I'll share this with my sons and cousins, for they have little understanding of what their relatives had in their "secret" history. My Uncle ran the "Shine" from the mountains of Southern WV, during prohibition to Knoxville, TN or Asheville, NC, then return with the empty containers back to the producers. So he was running, to and then running back. MY Grandfather was a Baptist Deacon at his church, and threw my Uncle out of the house for his secret endeavors. He knew nothing about his secret employment until, one of my other Uncles, who happened to be a WV State Trooper, came asking of his son's whereabouts, explaining to him why the authorities were looking for him. My Uncle never talked about his clandestine job, but others in the area I was raised, often talked about him, with some very interesting stories of his chase and near-misses with the law. It's all very interesting, and although it was illegal, it's still a part of our Great Americana Story.
Carver-1659, My dad's younger brother - Henry Asbury Carver 1907 - 1936, AKA: Rube Carver was killed in a car crash after being chased from near Asheville, NC to near Tuxedo, SC by 2 Federal & 2 Henderson County Officers. Suit says the officers fired pistols & guns into the rear of the car deflating the right rear tire near Tuxedo, SC. The officers rammed the car from the rear and side causing the car to flip and death certificate states crushing Carver's head. Had a Willard Caldwell passenger who crawled out and was arrested.  40 gallons of illegal moonshine was  in the vehicle. My father, mother & brother went to Asheville/Henderson, NC.  My mother said the car was full of bullet holes. My aunt Beulah Tipton Carver sued the 4 officers for $30,000 but the lawsuit was dismissed due to a my uncle violating the law and rules of the State in regard to automobile traffic. I have a copy of the newspaper clipping.

I'm not sure if my family were moonshiners or not - they have been living in Cocke Co. TN for many years (Newport TN).  I know that at least one uncle born @ 1925 ran booze from Cocke Co. to Knoxville TN for extra money, probably for fun, in his youth.  Popcorn Sutton was from this region.  This is fun!  Area surnames are Cope, McMahan, Stokely, Susong, Burnett - many more!
