How to reference a source in Biography

I don't seem to be able to get my head around sources and references in biographies.

I want to put Robert was born in 1888 [1] and died in 1890 [2]

I thought that putting

== Biography ==

Robert was born in 1888<ref>Birth</ref>. He passed away in 1945.<ref>Death</ref>

== Sources ==
<references />
England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index

England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index

should produce the correct source. This doesn't seem to work. Any help would be appreciated

This is how I source mine

== Biography ==

Robert was born in 1888<ref>"England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index of Robert ****" 1888 x quarter **** Registration district Vol. a Pg b</ref> in such and such a place<ref name="1891 England & Wales Census"/>.

He passed away in 1945<ref>"England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index of Robert ****" 1945 x quarter **** Registration district Vol. a Pg b</ref>.

==Census==

census details eg. Name, address, age, occupation, place of birth recorded as such and such<ref name="1891 England & Wales Census">"1891 England & Wales Census" census ref ie Piece Folio Pg</ref>

== Sources ==
<references />

Ah!! the reference is put in the bio in full and pulled out by the references tag. I was putting the reference info in the references rather than the ref tag

Hello David, Take a look at this video about inline referencing by Julie Ricketts. Watching this was a light bulb moment for me for understanding how to use the reference tags.

Yes, once you get it, it all becomes second nature! I'm still going back to some of my original ones and changing them to in-line sources.
What a good video. As you say, light bulb moment
It does suddenly all make sense after watching it. Much more effective than reading the guidance :)
BIG lightbulb moment!   Thank you very much .... this part was driving me nuts!!!

There are detailed written directions on this page. Also the first item is a link to a video, which shows how to do the same thing. Depending on your learning style.
