The Quakers Project exists to bring together WikiTreers interested in the Religious Society of Friends - the Quakers.

The Quakers can be a very rewarding group to work with because they kept meticulous records and generally married within the community.

Project members work to identify repositories and other sources for Quaker records, manage profiles for historically significant Quakers and link individuals with Meetings to which they belonged.

If you would like to help build a collaborative environment for researching your Quaker ancestors, just Answer this question below to tell us about your interests and we will get you a badge.

Thank you for introducing me to Hetty Green. I must have been daydreaming the day we learned about her in school *grin*  It looks like you weren't signed in to WikiTree when you commented. Be sure to sign in and then leave an answer so that we can find your WikiTreeID and add the Project badge.

Answer added :-)
I had to re-read the question but yes, it is there, though briefly stated.

There is now more emphasis in WikiTree to expect badged project members to actively participate in the projects they're members of. This is why we ask "candidates" to explain us in a bit more detail why they wish to join/which are their areas of interest. This is useful especially as it allows us to customize the comments when we award the project badges.

Also, project badges are not automatic. There are only two of us who can award Quaker project badges, and we both have a life outside of WikiTree. We hope you can excuse the delay.
Hi,

I've been marking my Quakers as I find them in my tree. I've also been adding copies or pictures to most of those I find. I add images of old Quakers Rolls so others can study them and maybe find their ancestors. I hope that helps with my Badge.

Thank E J Gooden
Hi, E J. This is going to seem bureaucratic but would you please go to the very first message on this page and click the "Answer" link. Answers are one of the ways that the leadership team makes sure that we've got everyone badged. You can paste in the message you just left as it tells what you're going to be working on and that's really helpful.

Thanks to #AncestryDNA, I learned that my Uncle is the Jersey Devil. Yes, my seventh Great Grandparents (Quakers), Japheth and Deborah Leeds gave birth to the legendary monster. Mother Leeds, old and destitute, was pregnant with her 13th child when she cursed her own misfortune. "Let it be the devil's child," she screamed, and so it was -- a monster with a horse's head, cloven hooves, bat wings and a pointed tail. It flew up and out the chimney, and has haunted the Jersey Pine Barrens ever since. Even Benjamin Franklin had once spotted the beast.

My grandmother told me not to research her side of the family because of a family secret and I wonder. Her family also directly descended from the Royal Houses of Tudor, Plantagenant, Stuart and Spencer. Now I really wonder! Fortunately, the family were Quakers with excellent records, here in Burlington, NJ.

What an amazing find, Gary ... talk about skeletons in the closet. If you'd like to join the Quakers Project, please click the answer link at the bottom of the first post in this thread. Seems bureaucratic but it's the way Isabelle and I keep track of all the members that get added.
Hi I related to Col. Ninan Beall and Wasson and Lear and bunch bunch more quakers I like to join the Quaker project to help out what I find.

Billie
Love it!

Ancestry DNA should feature you in one of their commercials.
Hello! I'd like to join the Quakers, as my paternal grandmother (maiden name Tilton) is descended from Quakers. I'd love to learn more about Quakers in general, as well as tracing the family as far back as I can.

Thank you very much!

I sincerely wish to join the Quaker Project. My line goes back to Merion, PA in William Penn's time. I have proven data on 3 direct ancestors found in Quaker records. I am struggling with a fourth - Isaac HARRY - who may have been disowned.
One of my goals is to assist in identifying the split and dissention to Episcopal, Baptist, and perhaps Moravian paths.

I would like to join the Quaker Project. I'm already working on numerous Quaker profiles trying to sort out Hussey/Garretson individuals and related family members in my tree and get them sourced, so I thought it would be appropriate to join the project

Yes.  I first became interested in Quaker genealogy when I observed on census records that my mixed-race ancestors continued to be surrounded by the same Quaker families whenever they migrated.  Those same Quaker names appeared as witnesses on their Free Negro Registrations.  I then learned the history of Quakers buying/assisting slaves and free blacks and getting them to free states.  When I turned to my father's line, I found that they were among the earliest Quakers to arrive (mid1600s).  Haddonfied, New Jersey was named for my 7th g-grandfather, John Haddon, whose daughter, Elizabeth came alone to America to manage her father's lands and established that town.  I descend through her adopted son (her sister's youngest son), Ebenezer Hopkins, and then the Jennings line.  Because of the famous unclaimed inheritance of William Jennens/Jennings of Acton, many families on both sides of the Atlantic and Australia have thoroughly researched this family in an attempt to connect.  A copy of that branch of our tree has been in my family for years.  I am eager to connect with others from this line of NJ Quakers (later moved to Warren Co. OH, then to Wabash and Huntington Co IN. where they turned into Methodists.

I would like to join the Quaker project.  I have identified a seemingly ever-growing list of my ancestors who were Quakers (mainly in Nantucket, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio, and Indiana) and would welcome the chance to collaborate.

I should very much like to join this project however my family Quaker line (on my father's side - name Sayers) is in England. Is your project only for America?
by

The project is worldwide and we'd be delighted to have more members participating for other countries than America.

You can start with the category for Quaker Meetings in England to what is already there - there is of course plenty to be done.

The individual families on the early Johnson side of my family were Quakers, i.e., Johnston, Hadley, Jefferis, Mendenhall, Robinson, and others.  I have worked up most of their information but have not entered it in WikiTree yet.  My main tree is on ancestry.com and consists of >45,000 individuals.  It is time consuming to enter the names and their respective birthdates, death dates and family members.  I am trying to get 6 generations to have solid information but that is done one individual at a time.

I would like to join the Quaker project.

I would like to join the Quaker Project.   Besides finding Quakers in my family tree, I hail from York County, PA where (I was told) the oldest Quaker Meeting House exists.   It's on Philadelphia Street in York City.  I never had the opportunity to go to this place but my son went several times with a family (down the road) who were Quakers and would take him along with them.

Now that I am "hooked on history", I would like to learn MORE !

Sincerely,

Jolyn Rebecca Snider

My great great Grandfather is Edward Wright from Maryland (per his son Joseph’s death certificate).  Tracing his seems to lead me to the Wright’s of North Fork Monthly meeting as well as Nicholite records.  I can read most of the handwritten Quaker Minutes and earlier items thanks to many years of reading medical handwriting and records.  Positively identifying the Edward Wright married to Sarah McCoy is my goal.

I've found that I have a LOT of Quakers in my tree - I'd like to join and participate.
by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Hi, SJ, Would you mind giving a little more detail about where your Quakers came from, so we'll have a better idea of which area of the project you could help?
Most of them (all of them?) came from England, most notably, the Beals and Claytons from Sussex who settled in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Hi SJ, sorry for the delay. I've awarded your badge with the notation that you will be working primarily with the profiles of English Quakers. Since those profiles also fall under the umbrella of the England Project, please review their Project page for any applicable guidelines.

By the way, were you the one who spoke about Hetty Green? it showed up as anonymous in the comment, probably because the device you were using didn't think you were logged in. I really enjoyed learning about her and wanted to thank you properly if it was you.

Don't forget to join the Google Group where we discuss ideas for improving the profiles and space pages related to the project. You can find a link to request membership in the box at the top of the project page.

No, not me for on Hetty Green.  I've known about the Pennsylvania Quakers for some time (Clayton and Beals) but have just recently discovered many more: Stout, Noblett, Hobson, & others.

I've just learned how to use Google Groups for the Sweden project - I'll log in now and request access.

thanks!

Yes, I would like to join the Quakers project. Many of my ancestors are the early Quakers that immigrated to the Philadelphia and surrounding areas. I look forward to contributing to the tree. Thank you! E K

I would like to know more about the ancestors. I am not sure if they were Quakers or Puritans or Separatists.
by Barbara Wilson G2G Crew (410 points)
Hi Barbara, What time period and location are the ancestors found? That can give clues as to which religion and/or sect to which they might have belonged.
They came on the Mayflower...William White and Susanna. Would they have the same religion here as they did in England?

If they came on the Mayflower in 1620, they would be Pilgrims. I'd suggest reviewing the Mayflower Project page.

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) was founded in 1652. Some of your ancestors may have converted, so keep any eye out for records that mention Monthly (or Quarterly or Yearly) Meetings. That's a pretty good indication that they were members of the Society.

Hope that helps

Thank you Debi. I will check it out.

I've been adding images and marking Quakers as I find them in my tree and others. I lost pictures and images so others can find their Quaker family. I hope this will be useful in obtaining my Badge.

I would like to join the Quaker Project to learn and continue my research on my Quaker ancestors.  I have quite a few Quaker ancestors that I have already contributed to my Wikitree lineage.  Thank you.
by Joyce Artz G2G Crew (820 points)

Welcome to the Quakers Project, Joyce. I had a look at the profile for William Miles, your 5xgreatgrandfather, to see if I had any tips from the Quakers Project prospective. I made a couple of edits so that you will have examples:

  • added monthly meeting categories - a quick way to determine whether categories already exist is to change the "Quakers in ..." space pages (for instance, Quakers in Ohio) to see if a) the meeting is listed and b) if there is a link for the category. If there's not, the GoogleGroup is where to ask for help setting one up.
  • added a bit of formatting to make the data easier to read (in my opinion, yours may vary, feel free to delete the two asterisks if you don't like the way it looks)
  • how to add a possible death location that won't cause the profile to show up on a suggestions report (Wiki ID menu > Suggestions). Non-standard words like burial, buried, and cemetery don't belong in place of death. Since he is buried in Ohio, he may have died there but there's no proof of that.  I verified that the burial location was in the biography, then set the death location to Ohio and set the uncertain flag. If you wanted to be even more broad in where he might have died, you could remove Ohio, leaving only United States. Please do leave at least a country with the uncertain flag since WikiTree is world wide.

Salut Isabelle et Debi,

I am busy categorising all the profiles on my Watchlist, and, of course, I keep encountering Cumbrian Quakers, with some who migrated to Canada and the Carolinas. As I categorise them (correctly I hope) do I qualify for a badge please?

I will probably just stay in my niche on Wikitree rather than spread myself thin in the Google space.

Current favourite is Gillespy-43.

by Chris Little G2G6 Mach 5 (51.5k points)

Welcome to the Quakers Project, Chris. Since you're touching all the profiles anyway, would you consider reading the guidelines in this month's Quaker Challenge. Our goal is to get the Quakers Project added to the trusted list of appropriate profiles. It sounds like those that you are touching would apply.

Let us know if you have questions about the categorization. We've got a bit of a re-organization going on due to the newish guidelines for religious categories but it shouldn't affect your work. If changes are needed, we'll be able to have editbot take care of it.

I believe I am already a member of the project. I hate to be a pest, but I work best when someone gives me a task. Otherwise I just get overwhelmed.

Correct, you're a member. We recommend you join the Google Group. Our Leader Debi frequently gives ideas for things to do (like lists of profiles to primp). We also have challenges every month. Start here at the project page (the link to the Google Group is in the box at the top).

Ok, I put in the request for the group. Now I just have to remember to check it! :P LOL

LOL Because I can't remember to check the Google Groups, I have them send email to me. I learned how from a GoogleGroups Help page.

I would like to join as I am from York County, PA and I've found several relatives who were Quakers.   My neighbors were Quakers and my son went along to their meetings several times.

From information I was taught (as a child), one of the oldest Quaker Meeting Houses was in my home city of York.   I never traced the information but as I work on my family tree, these questions will be answered eventually.

Sincerely,

Yes, I would like to join the Quaker project. It's a revelation to me discovering my Quaker roots. I had "heard" that my great-great grandparents on my maternal side had been Quakers, but not that our lineage went so far back.  And, I never heard we had once been in Nantucket and then North Carolina. I've traced my line from Lamm (Lamb) - Gardner - Newby - Nixon - Macy - Simmons - Starbuck - Tibbetts - Coffin.

In doing the research, I've come to love reading the Quaker records. I feel I "know" many of the families, especially in North Carolina. Even though the records are relatively straightforward, I have found you really need to pay attention to avoid making assumptions regarding duplicate names or MMs.

Thanks for contacting me,

Eileen
