The Quakers Project exists to bring together WikiTreers interested in the Religious Society of Friends - the Quakers.

The Quakers can be a very rewarding group to work with because they kept meticulous records and generally married within the community.

Project members work to identify repositories and other sources for Quaker records, manage profiles for historically significant Quakers and link individuals with Meetings to which they belonged.

If you would like to help build a collaborative environment for researching your Quaker ancestors, just Answer this question below to tell us about your interests and we will get you a badge.

Thank you for introducing me to Hetty Green. I must have been daydreaming the day we learned about her in school *grin*  It looks like you weren't signed in to WikiTree when you commented. Be sure to sign in and then leave an answer so that we can find your WikiTreeID and add the Project badge.

Answer added :-)
I had to re-read the question but yes, it is there, though briefly stated.

There is now more emphasis in WikiTree to expect badged project members to actively participate in the projects they're members of. This is why we ask "candidates" to explain us in a bit more detail why they wish to join/which are their areas of interest. This is useful especially as it allows us to customize the comments when we award the project badges.

Also, project badges are not automatic. There are only two of us who can award Quaker project badges, and we both have a life outside of WikiTree. We hope you can excuse the delay.
Hi,

I've been marking my Quakers as I find them in my tree. I've also been adding copies or pictures to most of those I find. I add images of old Quakers Rolls so others can study them and maybe find their ancestors. I hope that helps with my Badge.

Thank E J Gooden
Hi, E J. This is going to seem bureaucratic but would you please go to the very first message on this page and click the "Answer" link. Answers are one of the ways that the leadership team makes sure that we've got everyone badged. You can paste in the message you just left as it tells what you're going to be working on and that's really helpful.

Thanks to #AncestryDNA, I learned that my Uncle is the Jersey Devil. Yes, my seventh Great Grandparents (Quakers), Japheth and Deborah Leeds gave birth to the legendary monster. Mother Leeds, old and destitute, was pregnant with her 13th child when she cursed her own misfortune. "Let it be the devil's child," she screamed, and so it was -- a monster with a horse's head, cloven hooves, bat wings and a pointed tail. It flew up and out the chimney, and has haunted the Jersey Pine Barrens ever since. Even Benjamin Franklin had once spotted the beast.

My grandmother told me not to research her side of the family because of a family secret and I wonder. Her family also directly descended from the Royal Houses of Tudor, Plantagenant, Stuart and Spencer. Now I really wonder! Fortunately, the family were Quakers with excellent records, here in Burlington, NJ.

What an amazing find, Gary ... talk about skeletons in the closet. If you'd like to join the Quakers Project, please click the answer link at the bottom of the first post in this thread. Seems bureaucratic but it's the way Isabelle and I keep track of all the members that get added.
Hi I related to Col. Ninan Beall and Wasson and Lear and bunch bunch more quakers I like to join the Quaker project to help out what I find.

Billie
Love it!

Ancestry DNA should feature you in one of their commercials.
Hello! I'd like to join the Quakers, as my paternal grandmother (maiden name Tilton) is descended from Quakers. I'd love to learn more about Quakers in general, as well as tracing the family as far back as I can.

Thank you very much!

I am requesting to join the Quaker Project. I became interested in the project after recently discovering additional generations of Quakers in my line. Many of the profiles already exist in WikiTree, but they are not currently flagged as Quakers. I have set up the tag on my profile and would like to be awarded the badge. Thank you!!

Thanks for volunteering to help the Quakers project, Cheryl! Your badge has been awarded. Your next step will be to join the discussion group (link from the Project Page) where we do discuss how to improve Quaker profiles (among other things).

I like to join the Quakers project to help out.

I have several Quakers in my family. I like to join project to learn their culture and help place tags badges on the various families I find in tree. I also try to help with profiles. I have Wasson Lear Hartley Bealls all with Quaker roots. I spent bit time learning about Quaker’s as I didn’t even know what they believed or were. Some mine was also kicked out for marrying out of Quaker religion. So far I learned they may be cross between puritans and Amish. But still not sure I hearing correct. Need to learn so much on them but do know most ended up in America from religious processions.

Hi Billie, you need to be logged in and confirmed as a WikiTree volunteer before we can award you a badge. Thank you!
Hi Billie,

You weren't logged in when you requested to join the project, but I am pretty sure this is your profile https://wikitree.com/wiki/Bright-1984

I have added your badge and, if it isn't already done, will add you to the GoogleGroup. You don't need to be on the trusted list of pages in order to be a member of the project.

I come from a very long line of Quakers (back to the founding of the Society) including many Quaker ministers. Should have joined this group earlier on but here I am now. Have an 1885 genealogical manuscript of the extended Bond family (England, Carolinas, Ohio, Indiana, Kansas) which included numerous Quaker ministers and underground railroad operators. I am in the process of transcribing to make available to all. The manuscript contains an extended passage on the death of 4th great grandfather Samuel Bond which I have posted to his profile.

by T Stanton G2G6 Pilot (351k points)

Welcome to the Quakers Project, T. Thank you for sharing details from the manuscript. If you have scanned it, you could upload the images to a space page so others could view the original. You could also put out a call for for help with the transcription if, like most of us, you have more things to do than time to do them.

The Quakers discussion group (link from the Project Page) would also be a great place to share information about the manuscript. Thanks for joining us!

Yes I am a descendent of Quakers from Cumbria / Westmorland in northern England. I am done a lot of research into constructing a tree which I am now fleshing out with detail. Somewhere along the way since 1700 the Quaker beliefs changed and we became Church of England. I now live in Australia and find this fascinating as that side of the family is not religious at all. I have a very extensive tree in ancestry.com that I am preparing to upload here - over 8000 people that are either well researched or being researched.

Welcome to the project, Kristi. I have added your badge. Your next step will be to join the discussion group (link from the Project Page) where we do discuss how to improve Quaker profiles (among other things). I would also suggest joining the England Project. Depending on the time frame of your Quaker ancestors, they will probably fall under that project's guidelines as well.

Good evening fellow researchers, may I please join the Quaker Project? Apparently, I am related to persons of some note that I do not see on your list and would like to help grow the database when my yDNA results are determined with certainty. I am currently working with David Cushing at the Wright family DNA project.

Thank you, -John Wright
by John Wright G2G5 (5.8k points)
Hi John, can you tell us where those persons you are interested in were from? that will help us personnalize when we award your badge. Thanks !

The family came from East Nottingham, Chester, PA then relocated to Frederick, VA. Then relocated to Newberry SC and lastly relocated to Indiana, I believe. It appears that I am descended from John C Wright and Rachel Wells.

My mother's side of the family was from west-central Indiana (Clay, Sullivan, Putnam, and Hendricks counties). The original settlers in those areas were, for the most part, from North Carolina. I have specific interests in the Quakers of Guilford County, North Carolina and their ties to the community in Hendricks County, Indiana, as many of them are either direct ancestors or married into my lines.

Hi Jim,

Your Quakers project badge has been awarded. Next step is to add the "quakers" tag to your list of followed tags, and visit the project page where you will find the link to out Google discussion group.

i'd like to join the Quaker project.  I have numerous ancestors who were Quakers, George Maris, Nicholas and Nathanial Newlin, Nicholas Pyle, the Hollidays, Hills, Lancasters, etc.  Thank you!
by Vicki Kennedy G2G5 (5.3k points)
Great, Vicki. I understand you would be principally interested in (early) Pennsylvania Quakers? It's always interesting to know and helps us personnalize the comment that goes with your badge.
Hi Isabelle, I guess it would mainly be early Quakers.  I'm pretty sure some of my distant cousins are still Quakers, but none that I know personally.  I believe the Newlins went from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and then westward into Indiana and Illinois.  The Hills also came from North Carolina.   I was surprised when I first learned of all the Quakers in the family.
Thanks, Vicki! Your badge has been awarded.

I am very interested in joining the Quaker Project. I have a direct ancestor, John Harrod Webb, Webb-1629. I understand his father was imprisoned for his beliefs while in England.

Yes, I would like to join the Quakers Project. I'm not a Quaker but my dad was a birthright Quaker and my Quaker ancestors go back to about 1760.

I've been working on my Quaker roots for about 20 years and most of the results are on my website.

http://testfamilygenealogy.net/

The main page is dedicated to John Test who was part of the 1675 Fenwick Colony, moved over to Upland shortly after they landed and served as the first sheriff of Philadelphia.

He was a merchant and owned a tavern at Front and Walnut streets.

I have a special interest in the Ohio migration and the Quakers who settled in Columbiana, Belmont and Jefferson counties.

Hi, Caryl. Where did your Quaker families originate? Did they come to America and, if so, where did they settle and/or migrate?
Hi Debi,

I have English on my father's side that settled Nantucket Island, MA and became Quakers there.  On my mom's side, Irish Quakers who settled in Pennsylvania about 1700 and English Quakers that settled Maryland in the late 1600's.  Richard Hall is a GG+ on my Mom's side and he was a Friend here in Calvert Co. MD where I live now, George Fox visited here in the late 1600s according to the History of Calvert County I have.   Lot of Quakers!

Caryl
Thanks, Caryl. What a varied bunch you have to work on. I've added your badge; welcome to the Project!
Thanks Debi,

I have been working on Quaker ancestors recently and I want to coordinate with the project.  Thanks again for the badge!

I would like to join the Quaker club.  I have DNA cousins reaching back to William Neal (1746) and Rachel Leonard (1745).  I spend a lot of time with others that believe they are in the Quaker Neal line looking for DNA proof.

I would like to join the Quaker Project.

I am searching for information on the Guyer's family from Perquimans, North Carolina, Mary Guyer b-1775, daughter of Joseph Guyer and Miriam Bogue. I am fairly confident of this connection but I am looking for definitive confirmation. Mary Ann Guyer married Nathan Draper of Perquimans in 1797. He was married contrary to discipline.

My main objective is to trace my maternal lines as far as possible. If indeed I can confirm Miriam Bogue was Mary Ann's mother, then I can proceed.

I love that the Quakers kept such diligent records. But weeding through the common names like Mary is a challenge!

I'd like to join the Quaker project.  About a quarter of my family tree are Quakers, mainly out of Indiana.  And the descendants we trace back to in England in my surname are Quakers from the 1650s.  So I'd like to know more and where possible add to the database.  Stephen

Yes, I would like to join the Quaker project. I never realized the number of Quakers in my family until recently, so I would love to learn more, especially about my Estes and Douglas ancestors who were early settlers of Maine.

Sorry, I'm not certain what the question is.  My interest is in finding the  parents of my ancestor, James Brown, (1750-1826) born in Nottingham, Chester County, PA., died in Fayette County, PA.  I have had information from other descendants that his parents were Isaac Brown and Lydia Slater.  He was married to Elizabeth Thompson. He was a Private in the Revolutionary War. Isaac's father was Jeremiah, his father was James. I have looked many times at the Quaker Meeting records and know that Isaac and Lydia had many children, including a James.  Please help.  Thank you.

I have a lot of Quaker ancestors, most of my great-grandfather Chester Stidham's ancestors were Quaker, some going back to the 1600s. I have a few on my mother's side as well with the McConnells, Wilkinsons, and Ratcliffs etc. I have done a lot of research on these sides of my family and would like to help expand the coverage here on Wikitree.

Hi!  I would like to join the Quaker Project.  I have Quaker ancestors from Oyster Bay, New York and Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1600s-1700s. I will have some questions about proper citation formats, since the citations from Ancestry don't include useful information like meeting name, date, and page #.
