Uploading gedcom files [closed]

When uploading gedcom files does Wikitree now NOT connect any of them together?

Uploaded a gedcom, almost 5k people.  None of them are linked at all.  HOLY COW!  What is the deal?   I now have to physically connect every single person?

If I could delete it now, I would. Nothing like creating more work.

Hi, Betty. I believe you are talking about the "Betty_s Tree for Wiki.ged" Gedcom that you uploaded in 2013.

It looks like your gedcom did create many unconnected profiles, many of which also lack dates, sources, or other content (example: Lillian Ferg). The Gedcom process has changed significantly since 2013, so this could not happen any more.

If you have a gedcom, a copy of your family tree, or some other documentation of what your tree was supposed to look like and how these people are supposed to be connected, I'm sure that one or more members of the Connectors project (I am a member of that project) would be happy to receive your information and help get these people properly connected. Sourcerers project members might also be interested in pitching in to help.

Thank you for posting your question. I hope we can help fix the situation!

Thanks Ellen, and not sure if it is possible (not a real Gedcom expert) but I was thinking perhaps if Betty would or could upload her old gedcom and compare it now using the new Gedcom system, it might help or can be used to connect them all as well ?
Hi Ellen,

No, it is a gedcom I uploaded during the night for a distant cousin [[Tindle-24]] on his account.  At this point, he has only a few people connected to him period.  Almost 5k people uploaded, and none connected at all, although I did add his mother.

I have his tree, but if this is how it is going to work now, it seems to me to be a real pain.  Have to have the tree open in Ancestry, come back here to compare.  I, on my own tree do not have memorized every single person and how they are connected.  More work or am I missing a crucial element?  I'd honestly like to know, as I really do not want to compare, and link, 5k profiles individually.
It is a gedcom I uploaded for a cousin on his profile.  :(
Outstanding!  I did not trace back far enough to solve the riddle.  Bravo for Ellen!

Betty, then you are speaking of this recent upload? (because you have no recent upload in your own contribution list)

01:12: Tyrone Tindle uploaded RTTWiki.ged for GEDCompare [Thank Tyrone for this]

If this file contained 5,000 profiles, then it looks like the upload wasn't completed. Only a few profiles were edited, but none yet added.

Yes, Dennis.  The recent upload.  I am going thru the gedcompare looking at matches, but maybe it has been so long since I did my own upload I do not know how to "add" anyone. None of them are added.  Just the gedcompare list is all I can see.

Thanks.
right... because the import process has changed now. You have to add them one at a time now. But they still should remain connected to each other.
Dennis, How do you add them?  I checked a box to the left of a couple of the names, they disappeared.  I checked to see if those I checked appeared in his family tree, they do not. Other than that I do not see how to add them.  One at a time??  Why would they not upload linked?  I can see that particular implementation as being very discouraging.  It already has me discouraged.
I'm sorry... I've not yet used the new system personally, so I'm afraid I can't provide any specific help there.

I know there are many others on here who have... but you may have to ask a new, more specific question, to get their attention for help with using the new gedcom import process.
Thanks, Dennis.  I will ask a new question. :)
Sorry, Dennis, forgot I was on Tryone's profile.  Sigh...
Betty, in the current system, before you can add a profile from a Gedcom, you need to check all of the "suggested matches" for individual people in the Gedcom and either confirm them as valid matches or reject them. Once you have done that, you will see links to ADD those people that are not matched to profiles already in WikiTree.
Ellen, I realize this.  So, have almost 3k to compare and when somone's name is Mary Hunter and every single Mary pops up, it sucks.  Sorry.  Just very ticked off at this new process.

Betty: Separate from your concerns about the Gedcom you were managing for Tyrone, there are still a number of unconnected, unsourced, and sometimes unidentifiable profiles left from your 2013 gedcom important. Examples include

If you have information that would help get those and other people from your gedcom documented and connected to their family members, please consider sharing it with members of the projects that are focused on dealing with unconnected and unsourced profiles.

Hi Ellen.

Yes, I know.  I have been working on unconnected, unsourced for not only my gedcom but others to inlcude in the challenges.

I will work on my own in future, no others.
