I see only the consistent spelling, 'Meigs'. What is the change, and when?

Vincent Meggs, with three sons. ame to MA about 1637In the 1640s they moved to Connecticut, and some move on to Long Island by 1650. When they moved from M to Conneciticut Either Vincent or Joh his son changed the spelling to Meigs. The surname was always Meggs in England. No answer has been found as to why the change was made. The book" Record of the Descendabts of Vincent Meggs who cam to America from Somerset, about 1637" the book was published in 1902.

The usual answer is that "Authority" did the job. The Parish Clerk (normally at this time) put down the sound he heard, rather than a generally accepted spelling.
