Looking for birth and death of Edmund House (later Howse)

I am trying to find the birth and death of Edmund House (later Howse) [House-3995].

I have his marriage certificate to Lydia Hunt 19 May 1856 in Baptist Meeting House, Reading, Berkshire, and I have the birth certificate of one of his daughters Lillian Edith 14 Sep 1860 in Clapham, Surrey.

I have located him in the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses and he appears to have been born around 1833 in Cold Ash, Berkshire. His occupation was variously carver and gilder, gilder, builder, builder clerk(?).

He appears to have died between the 1871 and 1881 censuses as in 1881 3 of his children are living together with no parents and the eldest son Charles Edmund, age 22, is head of the family. I guess as the kids were quite young they had no idea what to do when their father died so it is possible the death was never registered, but I imagine he was buried somewhere.

I seem to have got all I can from FamilySearch. Any suggestions as to where I might go for further information.

Thanks Frank. I've just checked this on FreeBMD and his age is 0, so it's an infant death and not our man.

Lydia Howse d. 1874 aged 4 Wandsworth Reg. District

Lydia Howse d. 1879 aged 46 Wandsworth Reg. District

But I agree no sign of Edmund or Edward House or Howse.

Thanks. I have the latter's death certificate. It is Edmund's wife. I've not obtained the former's death certificate but I guess it would have been a daughter of Edmund and Lydia's.
The child matches the 1871 census.

The interesting recorded death is Edmund Cassam - right age, but surely it can't be?
Cassam? Right age as you say, and right registration district, but it does seem a far push from Howse to Cassam as you suggest.
What does wife Lydia's death certificate say? Who witnessed it and what, if any, indication does it give of her marital status? That might give some clues as to whether Edmund was still alive in 1879.

Something else to consider is whether Edmund may have left the family or even left the country, in which case you may need to be looking for a death later than 1881 and elsewhere. I have had a situation where my 3rd great grandmother was describing herself on the census as a widow while hubby was alive and well in another country with another woman.
That's a thought. I hadn't thought of that. She is described as wife of Edmund, so the assumption would be that Edmund was still alive, although the informant was their son Chas E.
Charles would only have been 20 then, so if he is the informant and she is shown as wife rather than widow, then that could be indicative of Edmund being away. There could have been a breakdown in the relationship or it may even be so simple as him having gone off, maybe abroad, to earn more money to support them or to pave the way for a family move later.
I'd not thought of him going abroad. That could make finding him fun!
It may be just a wild goose chase Graham, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility without considering it. My chap who was a carter from Newcastle, who I scoured England and Scotland for when hunting death records, finally popped up in Schenectady running an oyster bar ! Certainly makes it all good fun.
I can't find him emigrating. There is one in the US in 1900 but he emigrated in 1845!
I like the idea of him running off to run an oyster bar!
Many thanks for checking, Martin.
Martin. Long time, but I thought I'd take a long shot and get the certificate for Edmund Cassam but it doesn't seem to be my man! Worth a try though!
