Two Palatine Johann Jacob Loeschers married Susannas?

+3 votes

Going round in circles trying to straighten out some Palatine settlers who intersect with my New Netherland gang.

Genealogies and trees show Johann Jacob Loescher, eldest son of Palatine immigrant Sebastian Löscher, married to either Susanna Wheeler (Wielaer etc.) or Susanna Schlappy/Schleppy.

I figured out that Sebastian's Johann Jacob was too young to have married Susanna Schlaeppy in Germany in 1698 (marriage record on FamilySearch), so there must be another Johann Jacob. I found the Palatine passenger list record for them and their children on Ancestry and children's baptisms on FamilySearch:
Jacob & Susanna Schappy Loscher, arrived 1710 with 5 children:
Johann Jacob bp 13 Aug 1699
Anna Elisabetha bp 20 Dec 1701
Anna Maria bp 1 Apr 1703
Susanna bp 21 Sep 1704
Johann Adam bp 11 Sep 1707

So this makes sense that there were two arrivals named Johann Jacob Loescher in 1710: (1) the 20-year-old son of Sebastian, and (2) the married father of 5.

My person of interest is Anna Elizabeth Loscher (or Litzer, Litcher, Litsher, Litser, Pitcher). She married Petrus Jeralemon <1746 (Petrus's father: Joralemon-18). Everyone seems to agree that this is the right baptism for her:

Annatie L (Liesabet), 1718 Kinderhook, parents Jacob Litzer, Susanna Litzer; witnesses Roberts Wielaer, Maria Wielaer.

So which couple are her parents?

The witnesses suggest a connection to the Wheeler/Wieler family - Robert and Maria appear to be children of Edward/Evert Wheeler (see Pat Wardell's Wheeler doc), but I cannot find a Susanna Wheeler anywhere. No one that mentions her includes any sources. Edward has a child Sara, but she married someone else.

There are couple other connections:

Susanna Lyster m. John Robberts 29 Jul 1722 in Albany; they both appear as witnesses at the birth of Elizabeth Litzer's child John Juraalmond in 1747. Susanna may be the one bp. 1704 in Germany as noted above.

Hendrick Litcher and Susanna Litcher were witnesses at bpt. for Elizabeth Litcher's child Susanna Jeralemon 1752 Kinderhook. Hendrick Lisser, Lisjer, Litsyer and wife Anna Huyck have a number of children bp. in Albany 1737-1744. No baptism record found for Hendrick but possibly he could have been born to Susanna Schlappy after 1710.

Maria Litser/Pitcher and her husband Cornelis Van Buuren m. 1722 in Albany, were witnesses for Elisabeth Litcher/Pitcher's child Elisabeth Jeralmon 1754 Kinderhook. Maria may be the one bp. 1703 as noted above. (One genealogy claims she is also a child of Sebastian Loscher, born enroute in 1710, but that would make her 14 at the time of marriage: Also note she had a daughter named Zusannah.)

Another possible problem for the young Jacob / Susanna Wheeler theory - FindaGrave says that Johann Jacob, son of Sebastian, died in 1711: However, most trees show a death date for him in 1725.

I have done a lot of digging around in Kinderhook and Albany records and have gathered as much as I can from Pat Wardell's docs, but there may be other key sources that I am missing that would help to fill in some of these blanks.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Other people's trees can cause us a world of confusion. (And that includes the findagrave page you noted, which is only a collection of unsourced user-submitted information).

I suggest that you go back to the beginning and start compiling every piece of information that comes from an actual record (or, when necessary, a usually reliable secondary source like Pat Wardell who cited a record).
