Not to be a downer, but to balance that out I wonder how many NEW suggestions have appeared in their place?
by Steven Tibbetts G2G6 Pilot (409k points)
My guess?  125,326.
It's not a downer at all, Stephen, it's reality. This is why we need to constantly keep working on these profiles.  I'm sure the number of suggestions increases not only because of new profiles but also because Ales frequently adds new parameters to check for errors.
Actually, Star, it's a complete downer.  I started tracking how many errors there are for the different states I work on (I don't participate in challenges).  There are more errors today than there were when I started.  It makes the entire effort seem fruitless.
The more profiles there are on wikitree, the more errors there will be. The fact is that wikitree is growing all the time and so errors are bound to appear. Some of them are minor, others are more serious and need more sorting out. The great thing is that there is an army of people working together to make wikitree great. It's not a downer. It's a success story.
Yes, and more types of errors are added ALL the time, so that we are on a ceaseless treadmill of error correction.

>> why we need to constantly keep working on these profiles

Wikitree need a root case analyze

  1. Example
One stupid "software bug" when a person upload a family tree created +900 errors some are in LNAB and will never get fixed

  2. WikiTree solution
    1. The person was banned and dont really understand why
      1. combination of difficult topic and unskilled
    2. Cost
      1. angry user that will say Wikitree is not good
      2. the user stopped using WikiTree and will tell other people nt to use WIkiTree
      3. Time
        1. the user spent maybe 30 hours confirming bad profiles
        2. It will take +100 hours to fix this by hand if possible
  3. Root case solution
    1. Problem
      1. Imported GEDMATCH has wrong character set
      2. Exported from an old version of the software
      3. WikiTree import code don't check bad characters it just import
      4. WikiTree import code don't convert bad characters
    2. Suggested Solution
      1. Ask the user to upgrade her software and try again
      2. Change the code in WikiTree
        1. to stop import bad GEDCOMS
        2. or to import AND  convert "bad characters"

I think the root case why the WikiTree solution is as it is because of the missing change management and lack of support tickets and traceability.

I looked on the GEDCOM file and it was a mess so the easy solution is 3.2.1 say no to GEDCOMS with "odd characters" and not in UTF-8 character set....

the Welcoming WikiTree approach cost to much pain and you get those 1000 new errors.... maybe its good for the error fixing statistics but in the end the Wikitree quality will be less good....

Thanks for the new statistics, Eowyn.  I love all the stats we can glean from the data we collect.  It inspires me to keep working on our tree.  It's sort of like cholesterol numbers.  I want to increase the "good" numbers (number of profiles, number of photos, number of connections, etc.) and lower the "bad" numbers (number of unsourced profiles, number of errors, etc.).

I believe the number of new suggestion errors is far fewer than they used to be.

The biggest stumbling block are the sheer volume of locked profiles with errors.  I find if I query y the PM name often a PM with an error has a lot more than 1 or 2.  These are often unresponsive PMs who have not been active in more than a year, sometimes more than 2 years.

That contributes I think to the feeling we can't make a dent but the truth is we do make much more than a dent.  A lot of suggestions are way down from where they were.  I just wish I had more time right now.  Unfortunately this is my very busy season and I have little time to do what I want to do.

It’s amazing that if each of us does a little bit it all adds up and we make a big difference.
