Many of my DNA-matches have an ancestor from Scotland; surname Affleck (Wellam/William). So if there is anyone with the same ancestor I'd like to check if we share some DNA.

Affleck baronets here

Betham drew a complete blank on their ancestry, but Burke got as far as 5th in descent from Sir John Auchinleck of Auchinleck.  (Which might be factual or purely hypothetical)

Wikipedia reckons Auchinleck was forfeited in 1504 and granted to a Boswell, from whom it descended to the famous writer of that ilk.

But there were other Auchinleck branches, so the "of Auchinleck" might just be a bit of Burkean decoration.

According to this there were Fletts who changed their name to Affleck

Just FYI, Affleck is the Scots pronunciation of Auchinleck.

An American with the same surname "Flack" contacted me and asked me if I had done a DNA test. He was looking for the area in Ireland that his ancestors came from and noted mine came from County Cavan. I agreed and the results showed that we both had "Affleck" connections to Ayreshire in Scotland via Northern Ireland within 10 generations! It has been suggested that "Flack" is probably an Irish shortening of "Affleck" - "from the place of the stones" eg "flagstones" etc "flagging", etc. My father believed it came from "flax" and was originally Dutch!
