Biography Builders Nov/Dec 2017. Pick a town.

Question

This Month Nov. 15 through Dec. 15: The theme is Pick a Town.

Choose one town or city or village. Then write profiles for people who lived there (at any time). For instance, I will probably pick Hartford or New Haven, Connecticut. If you have ancestors who lived in one place for several generations, this is a great opportunity to give them great profiles. Of course they don't have to be ancestors or on your watchlist.

Biography Builders Goal: To make profiles as complete as possible with well-written biographies and sources. You should research as much as you can find on a person, writing the information onto the profiles to create as complete a life story as you can for that person. Sourcing should be full citations. This includes adding categories and links to events and people connected to that profile and citing all those additions. See the first month for examples of how to participate.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section.

• birth date/place
• names of parents
• marriage date/place and spouse name
• death date/place

Biography Section:

• Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
• Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
• As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
• Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
• Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
• List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
• One of the suggestions was siblings. I think this takes up real estate.
• Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
• Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
• Categories/Projects.
• Connection to the Global Tree.
• All duplicates merged or initiated.
• Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
• Historical context as related to the person's life.
• Sources, Sources, Sources.

I’m not sure I’m quite up to this but have found  some Guilford Connecticut needing sources and details and those will lead to a couple of families who were early settlers in a region in Illinois.

That's a great theme - but I'm struggling to decide...the town I live, the neighbouring town where a lot of my ancestors came from, with a massive cemetery I can take photos of, or a village in another county that has a family with an unusual surname.....

I think I'll go for  the neighbouring town...I can take photos of the gravestones easily and can get newspapers/parish registers etc...so I'm going for Margate, Kent, England

I think it would also be a good idea to commemorate the war dead - so I will take a photo of the war memorial and see if I can create profiles for those named.

In Margate, we also have lost many men to sea through the Coastguard & Pilot service, so I would like to work on those too...

Sandwell-28 This one has an interesting story, and I will create a profile for Jane COX as she is quite a character with a possible link to a "suspicious" drowning a woman of ill repute who drowned in suspicious circumstances - 

Cock-1033 baptism, newspaper reports and death

Sandwell-4 - added in links to census citations and tabulated census data

Ford-3665 - cleared gedcom cruft, added marriage & tabulated census details - list of children to be copied across from husband's profile.

Sandwell-29 - baptism, wives, 1841-1881 census details, list of children with birth years/place. death, burial and photos of grave

Sandwell-31 - baptism, wife, list of children with birth year/place, 1841-1871 census - death year/place - tricky one to get genealogically defined as he didn't die where I expected and took ages to find the evidence of his death (all ancestry trees have wrong death date or no death date) - note to self to get hospital records

Sandwell-32 baptism, census 1841-1911, child, death - hopefully gravestone picture soon

Not related to me but a well known person in Margate Sanger-33 I've added photos of the famous memorial - just need to check with cemetery whether he was actually buried there, or whether it is just a memorial. Added newspaper obituaries. Added census which conflicts with place of birth so I need to find more evidence of birth/baptism & parents. Added list of children. Added probate and research notes.

I will work on Lockport, New York since that's where most people were from in my tree. It's pretty interesting, there's a batch that got there when Western New York was the frontier and farmed for a couple hundred years. They tended to be English or Dutch Protestants. Then there's a batch that got there in the 1910s/1920s with all the German, Italian, British, etc. Catholic immigrants (plus a bunch of French Canadians). That second group all intermarried and have stayed put to this day. It's not a big place so I find it mind-boggling how many immigrants there were at the same time. I wish someone with more training and time than me would study it!

If I looked at my husband's side, I would have chosen Hornell, NY for the same reasons. They seemed to have a batch of immigrants from Syria and Lebanon which is the only place so far in our tree that people are from outside Europe and North America.

That's interesting. Did your ancestors work on the Erie Canal, or just benefit from the boom to the economy? Mine settled on an Erie Canal town (Jordan) just before it was built, but didn't work on it. See http://www.eriecanal.org/

It doesn't seem like they did - I think it was mainly Irish people who worked to build it and they're conspicuously absent from my tree! I do have couple of people here or there who worked as locktenders but it doesn't seem like the canal is the reason they ended up there.

Just came across this profile - I'm loving the idea - Rather than pick a place where my wife's family lived, I'll start with Sydney's Rookwood cemetery, where several generations of many different branches of the family ended up being buried.

That is quite a tale. From thief to Esq. It's also very well done. At first I thought the timeline was a little redundant, but after reading the whole profile, I realized it's like an outline, and a summary, of his life, and probably helps to keep you organized as you write the bio.

I will be doing Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, since that's where many of my relatives are from.  This is my incentive to improve those profiles by adding in-line citations, more details, and categories.

1. Merle Kline (my infant uncle) - Added biography, sources, and categories.
2. Donald Miers - created profile, wrote biography, added in-line citations and categories, and added photo.
3. Glen Kline - Added information to biography with sections and in-line citations, formatted all sources properly, added link to a photo on another profile.

I am a little late for to post for this month's challenge but I have been working on my ancestors from Bellfountain, Benton County, Oregon. Here are the ones that I have completed this month:

4. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Penton-132 Profile was unsourced.  Added sources, text to the bio, data on wagon train to Oregon in 1848  and project box for Trail and Wagon Trains project.  Keturah died in Coos but lived most of her life in Bellfountain.

5. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Belknap-573 Created profile for Keturah Pelton's husband George Belknap.  Added sources, text, wagon train data and project box for Trails and Wagon Trains project.
