Duplicate Family Lines

+7 votes
I've found what appear to be two lines of descendants in the Thomas Crenshaw family.  Looking at the descendants of Crenshaw-64 and Crenshaw-126, it appears that many of these profiles represent the same individual and should be merged.

What would be the recommended quickest, easiest, and/or most effective way to deal with duplicated branches in need of merging?  I know that there is no mass-merge tool, but I'm interested to hear everyone's preferred method of dealing with this situation.

I usually start from the bottom up, and link all children to what would be the lowest number profile of their parents after merges are complete, then initiate merges for all of the duplicates.

You should always start with the oldest people in the line. First merge the duplicate profiles for the parents, then merge their duplicate children. Then work down through their descendants.

I'm sure there is no one "right" way to do this, and different methods may work better depending on the set of profiles that need merging.

I usually start at the top because a merge asks you to resolve the duplicate parents.  This also helps me not to miss anyone, especially if there are many descendants.  Like you, I link all children and spouses to what will be the lowest number of the parents after the merge.  This prevents some of the children appearing as half siblings while waiting for merges to be approved. I also clean up a profile if it has been merged before so it has one bio and one set of sources, and remove any GEDCOM cruft that may still appear in the bio.

copy and paste your work from the said profile to a word program and save it and name the file, then merge(:
