My great grandfather, James Nichols and family are in the 1870 Census in Sellers, Hardin County, Illinois. My grandfather is the John Nichols listed.  I have searched all surrounding states for the family prior to 1870 and have had no luck in finding them.  Any help is much appreciated.

Do you have any additional information such as his birth year, marriage yer and  or death year? Can you say the name of his wife and their children?
James Nichols birth year appears to be 1815.  Wife's name is Elander or Elanden with birth year of 1815 also.  I am very limited in knowledge of them as the 1870 census is the only information I have.

James Nichols first son Alex was born 1846, Kentucky,so he lived in

Kentucky for a time. Then his son James was born 1850 in Illinois.

His wifes  name Elander is likely miss spelled.I looked for death records

but did not find.

Correct, also in the next house on that census was a John Low and wife Emma with children.  The Emma is also the daughter of James Nichols.  1880 census of Little Black, Randolph, Arkansas has the Low family with my grandfather, John H. Nichols listed as brother in law in their household. John H. seems to list his parents as being from different states in every census year.
