Family member was able to create his profile when it already exists

+7 votes
My dad is trying to sign up to be a volunteer. But when he created his account as a guest, he somehow got a new profile, when one already exists for him (I'm the manager). I am trying to understand how this happened. Does a new account automatically get a profile? I can't remember what happened when I created my account.

Should I have done something ahead of time to prevent this?

I believe if you'd entered his e-mail address on the profile of him, he would have joined from that profile and then been granted Profile manager status.

The duplicate profiles will now need merging, which should be straightforward.

Nail and head come to mind! putting in the email address before they create the account is MY job, then it all works out. That makes sense! Thank you!!

I am going to leave a definitive answer for the experts, who should be along shortly. For many new to Wikitree, as I was two years ago, a click of the mouse can result in a conundrum. What just happened?!
But if you are patient and listen to the Wikitree experts (who are also teachers), at some point the fog will be lifted. Wikitree is a cool and happening place!
