Old obsolete CD.

Question

I know this is probably on a par with seeking hen's teeth, but does anyone here in the UK have a copy of the CD 'LDS Companion' ? I have little doubt that it is not longer offered, and probably is not even compatible with modern systems, but I think it might help with a project I am working on.

If you have such a thing hiding in your old junk box somewhere, I would be interested in getting it, please contact me if you have.

I have a copy of the CD "Personal Ancestral File" Companion 2.0 ; also a copy of the file "PAF4 patch for PCOMP.

I can view the file contents of the CD in Windows10.

However, I'm in Australia.

Nothing is ever simple, is it ?

I purchased the 1851 and 1881 British censuses, and found that I needed the resource file viewer, that was in the 1881 wallet, but then found I would also need an additional CD, at more expense of course.

In disgust I shelved those CDs, feeling that I had made a purchase in good faith, expecting it to work.

Now, modern computers do not have CD drives, so the only way is to load the entire file onto the hard drive of an old system, then transfer it to the new one.

I do not use Windows, I have a Mac. I did e-mail the LDS, but they were not at all helpful, stating that they no longer support that system.

So I am left trying to find some way to make use of what I have.

I have the 1881 census on CD and recently tried to install it on Windows 10 without luck, and I decided nor to pursue it. However, I guess you could install a virtual machine on your Mac, such as Oracle Virtual Machine, and an old version of Windows. And you would need a USB CD-ROM drive. It all gets a bit involved, but I imagine it's possible.

Yes, Graham, complicated and costly. I avoid Windows, because it is so vulnerable to hackers and viruses, currently over 30,000 viruses active on the internet designed to attack Windows. Yet another reason not to permit 'cookies'. Modern computers have ample storage, so putting it on the hard drive is the better option, provided you can borrow an older computer and the relevant CDs to make the changeover.

Vivian's comment above may be of help to you, but Windows 10 is not much help for me, unless Linux can handle it.

I have no idea if this is helpful. Have you thought of looking on eBay? I search it using picclick.com. There are currently 4 possible useful hits but I have no idea if they are what you seek. See what you think.
