Richard,

I was going to take a look and see if I could help you locate your ancestor, but it helps the search to narrow things down. (Most of the time it's not as easy as just matching a name to a birth date and place, especially for records before 1840.)  One is usually following slight leads, like a detective, and gradually getting to the records that will actually confirm that one is looking at the right record.

Do you have information about any of Nathan's family members?  For example, do you descend from his son, and if so, do you have his son's name? That would help to decide whether any information located pertains to the right Nathan Ferrell..  Do you know his wife's name?

Here is an 1850 census record that may or may not be Nathan's family.  It does not provide Nathan's parents, but it provides context that may help to find the right family.

Below is a link to an 1860 census record for a Nathan Farrell, born approximately 1808, but it is probably a different Nathan Farrell.

Do either of these contain information that would help rule them in or out as the right family?

Ancestry.com members list Peyton N. Ferrell (1786-1871) and Margaret Feeck as parents. No data is provided to prove this but it might give you a starting place.
The 1850 US Census has Nathan Farrell's wife as Henrietta. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1808. Why do you think this is the wrong Nathan Farrell.
Frank,

I'm not sure if you were asking me or asking the Richard Ferrell, who made the original post.  I found two different Nathan Ferrells -- or at least they appeared to have different family members -- in different census years in New York at FamilySearch.  That was before Betty Fox posted the info about possible parents' names listed at Ancestry, so I was looking for some information to narrow the search..  I didn't have anything but the name Nathan Ferrell and the birth year 1808, and I located at least two Nathans who fit that information.

As far as I know, if the lead posted by Betty Fox is correct for this family, you came up with the right information.

Yes, this is my family in the 1850 & 1860 censuses.

The 1850 and 1860 census records do reflect my family: 1850 in Brooklyn NY, 1860 on a farm in NJ. Either they moved or had two residences in 1860. Portions of the NJ property remained in my family until the 1950s.

I think there is a high probability that Peyton N. Farrell is Nathan Ferrell's father. Peyton would be 22 when Nathan was born.

Ancestry.com shows offspring of Margaret Feeck and Peyton Ferrell does not include Nathan (if Ancestry.com is correct).
