Question

The Quebecois Project covers profiles who lived in Canada, Nouvelle-France (modern day Quebec) during the 17th century and up to 1763.

Danielle and Guy are always looking for members who are ready to help create, source, connect, and improve profiles related to the people and places in Canada, Nouvelle-France and also help in different tasks in the mission of the project.

To join, "answer" this thread and read the instructions and follow the link to our Google Group on "How to Participate" from the project page....

Many of my ancestors came from New France to what is now known as Northern Michigan and Northern Wisconsin, some are in the history books, I look forward to connecting families from these regions back to Quebec and then to France!

Navarro, they were women brought to the colony by various agencies to provide wives for the colonists, the main difference between them and the Filles du roy is that they got no support from the crown at all.  Those counted among them precede the filles du roy, ie before 1663.  Although that is a bit debatable in my view.

If you get to a a federal or the provincial archive, you may find the microfilm of the original contract or parish record. Guillaume Audouart dit St-Germain  (info about him here http://www.biographi.ca/fr/bio/audouart_guillaume_1F.html    was the lawyer/notary of the time and he kept very accurate records and notes, so you would be looking for the "Audouart" microfilm and then have to scan through the records looking for the relevant names. I found the actual contract and the marriage registration this way (Breton/Patenostre (Patenaude), but there are also records of land transfer etc.  The very cool thing in this case is that the French records noted her father was a bookseller, so I wondered if he might have taught her to read. In Audouart's note about the contract he mentioned that "Marguerite Breton signed", so I went looking on the basis of that comment - and she actually did!

My mother was half French Canadian.  I appreciate the  volume of work involved, since once you get into the Drouin resources, its easy to become swamped with ancestors, and teasing out what's valid from a near miss gets increasingly difficult.  Are you incorporating DNA in the project?

hi Rita, DNA is a whole other ball of wax, since ideally you need at least 3 people descended from the same person who all have done DNA testing and recorded it in the tree to really be able to say it's a match.  We're not getting into that right now.  Welcome aboard.

I've been working on my side of the family since January 2017, so I'm kind of new, but I'm taking my time so it's a slow-deliberate Crawl.

I'll be expanding details of the colonization of Bagotville 1838 by Philippe Castagne and hopefully contribute to the already existing profile of Mars Simard.

Also I'll be tackling the life of Andre Castagne and the Shipwreck of the Swordfish in 1867 off Gaspe.

slow but sure is always best, that way you can add your sources properly at the start and not have to go back to add them later.  Welcome aboard.  The shipwreck item sounds more like it would belong in Canadian history project, given the date.

I would love to join this project, particularly interested in working on the sub-project for the filles du roi. All eight of my great-grandparents were born in Quebec; sadly, no one in my family today is fluent in Quebecois. I would like to contribute any way I can to preserve their cultural history despite that!

I am researching Meloche/Malosh and have information for the line I'm researching from these two books:  "The Meloche Legacy:  A Meloche Family History Dating Back to the Year 1573" by James Meloche, and "Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River Region, 1701-1936" by Christian Denissen.  I would love to contribute to the project!

Ok, I clicked on the link and also did not get the page, so did a search this time and got https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Livernois-220 which appears the same so I don't know.  the other way is to erase on your page URL your last name and code number and replace it with Livernois-220 or do a search like I did, other then that I don't know what to tell you.

I would like to help when I can.  I am slowly moving my tree into WikiTree and I have thousands of French Canadian and Acadian ancestors and their families to include.  Most lines go back to the early to mid 1600s.  I am adding everyone individually so I can include only documented relationships.

Helping a friend with his tree with many relatives from Nouvell-France and have been adding a few new members. Looking forward to contributing to this project and helping out.

 

As a side note, thanks you for the Guidelines for Places and Names sections. I have been adding new profiles and was unsure about how to enter the place names, so found the guidelines particularly helpful!

I have not got that far yet in my tree here - BUT I have boucoup french ancestors and it seems they were so well traced - sourced I am not sure I have to look at my books I did so long ago - but I can add what I have - I come from those in new france - and those that ventured west - the voyageours and the Filles du Roi and ... jeeze I can not remember the guys who came what they were called right off hand right now - but I hpoe to share and learn!

 One thing I do notice that makes these people very hard to keep straight is that many of the families named the children the same names as the previous generation so sometimes you are not sure where you are in time - I find it helpful to make a tree with them where they line up with the year born so you can keep it straight - any one else notice this annoying tendancy?

lol, that's one reason I'm glad we actually have pretty good records available here.  Some places are a nightmare with very few records remaining, from what I have been told by cousins who research other parts of the world.

I am so lucky to have roots in places where people kept track!  I was so amazed at how much is available and how quickly I was able to find the "French Quarter" of my tree - on moms dads side too - Dutch and so forth starting New Netherland and that area- extensive church and other records there too - perhaps if it was not for my luck I never would have got hooked on this hobby
