Hello All...

I posted a question on the 12th about a DNA result that had high cM. That person is my second cousin, his grandmother is my dads sister. Does this mean I can check my dad as confirmed with DNA?

Your original question was here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/503243/can-someone-help-me-understand-this-dna-stuff

If his grandmother is your dad's sister, then he is your first cousin once removed, not your second cousin.

The total shared cM of 381.6 is consistent with 1st cousin once removed (which averages of 425 cM).

If you have the test information entered into the tree with the necessary permissions, and you can citations to the relevant profiles sourcing the DNA match, and mark your dad, your cousin's parent, and your cousin's grandmother all as confirmed by DNA.

With a paper trail and test verification, up to 3rd cousin is allowable. Beyond that triangulation is necessary.

Hi, DJ. If the relationship is through your father and your aunt, it sounds like the new match would be a 1st cousin 1x removed.

Following the instructions about WikiTree DNA use and confirmations, per WikiTree policy you can certainly mark your father as "confirmed with DNA." That said, your cousin must have a profile on WikiTree (with his DNA test information entered), and all the profiles connecting the two of you--including your father and both grandparents, and his mother and his grandmother (your father's sister)--also have to be in place.

Following the instructions I linked to, and making certain each profile has the appropriate DNA source citation, you'd be able to mark your father as confirmed, and he would be able to mark his mother and his grandmother as confirmed. In other words, each step up to but not including the MRCA couple, your grandparents. Of course, that's assuming I've got the 1C1R relationship correct....

Hi Edison, Yes he is my 1c1r but I'm afraid he isn't a member here. He has  an account at GEDmatch. That is where I ran the comparison. So I can't do a confirm with my dad?? They are all still alive except for my dad. At least I know I have a conformation. Not that I had any doubt. lol

Yeppers. Understandably, WikiTree basically works from the paper trail to the DNA, not the reverse. So all the relevant profiles have to be in place here before a DNA connection can be used.

If your cousin is concerned about privacy, be sure to let him know he doesn't even have to use his or his mother's given name: it can be just an initial or, gack, "Anonymous." Or, if you have enough basic info and he gives you permission to do so, you can enter his profile for him.

Be persuasive.  :-)
