Are we categorizing people by their diseases now ?

I am receiving requests to categorize people by the diseases they had or suffered from in their lifetime. Is it necessary ? I know that if I suffered a disease, I would not want to be known as a  "sufferer " in one of these categories . Biography , maybe, but not sterotyped.

Since there seemed to be interest in disease related categories (on the discussion Chris linked to), I set up a category structure for tuberculosis sanatoria. In the early 20th century, the sanitorium was considered the best way of providing treatment to tuberculosis sufferers, and sanatoria were both a medical and cultural phenomenon. Some had population peaks making them the size of villages, and some patients lived there for years. In this way, categorizing people by an important event or place in their lives makes sense.

As for cause of death categories, I feel like these would fill up quickly and not be of much use, unless they are broken down further into culturally important events (Spanish Influenza Outbreak 1918 for example).

I agree. People who died in a particular disease outbreak makes more sense than something like everyone who's ever died of smallpox, or something.
