Note: Please see the [New Join Post]

Hi! WikiTree recently asked project leaders to take actions to encourage participation by all members in order to revitalize their projects. So... as of 1 December 2017, folks who join the Magna Carta Project will have 9 months to complete two (out of three) requirements to remain an active member. For a brief overview of what the project does, see the previous join post. For the new requirements, see [this page].

The Magna Carta Project is fairly complex, so if you want to join, be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get to work! Please read through the previous join post, the Project page, Base Camp, and the Project Members page before posting an answer to this post asking to join. It would be great if you name the Gateway Ancestor you'd like to be Guardian for in that post.

If you don't have time to be an active project member but want to help monitor project profiles, you can sign up as an affiliate member - just add the Magna Carta Project Affiliate sticker to your profile (somewhere below the first headline in your biogaphy) and ask to join the project's Profile Alerts Google Group.

If you just want to identify that you have a gateway ancestor in your tree, you can use the Descendant sticker (see [this page] for examples using the project's logo).

We'd love to have you join the project, but it is a labor of love!

Cheers, Liz

ps - I forgot to mention in this post that members need to have the pre-1700 badge.

I'm hoping to have time in the new year to flesh out some of my lines and would like to tie them in. But they are not American lines, and it looks as if all the gateway ancestors in the queue were descended from emigrants. How do we do MC descents for British people?

Hi Monica - WikiTree's Magna Carta project was created to clean up and care for the profiles of the surety barons and their descendants through to the Gateway Ancestors documented by Douglas Richardson, which are all immigrants to colonial America prior to 1700, which excludes lots of people. That's why the new concept of stickers is so great. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Stickers where there are some copy/paste examples you can use for those not eligible to be included in the project.

Cheers, Liz

Thanks, Liz! It's nice to have a way to celebrate MC ancestry in some way for those of us from the UK.

So, for example, Odingsells-7 has a badge as ancestress of one or more American gateway ancestors, but her daughter Ela does not. Would it be possible to use stickers to trace a line from Ela? Would that be the affiliate sticker?

I see you don't need confirmation from the project to use the stickers, so I guess it's a matter of making sure the lines are backed up as well as they can be.

you'd use descendant stickers all the way down the line.

the Affiliate sticker was created for folks who wanted to show their interest in the project but did not want to actively participate in the project - you could add the sticker to your profile, for instance. And anyone with the Affiliate sticker is welcome to join the project's Profile Alerts Google Group: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta (include your WikiTree ID ... I can't always tell who's asking by the e-mail).

The Magna Carta Project sticker _is_ monitored by the project & is used to signify maintenance by the project. Because the Magna Carta Project does not add the project box to a profile before it has been developed/reviewed/approved as part of a trail from a Gateway Ancestor to a Surety Baron, we needed a way to keep track of all the profiles we used to be a manager for (WikiTree recently clarified its guidelines & a project box of any project that is a profile manager must be displayed on that profile; we can add the project account to the trusted list of any profile; the Magna Carta Project sticker signals our interest in the profile). Clear as mud? Took me a couple of months to figure out the clarifications LOL.

This G2G post covers a lot of it, but not explicitly the bit that a project must display its project box on a profile in order to be a profile manager: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/510196/

This G2G post raises the other clarification, that project members should be active in that project (which is why the Magna Carta project developed the Affiliate sticker): https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/499743/  Members are being asked to meet certain requirements now (see [this page] for details).

for example:

I added a slightly different one to Ela's profile.

and... I just looked up Ela in Richardson - she _is_ eligible for the project. There is a footnote that says Robert Abell, Nathaniel Littleton, and Richard More are descendants (and Gateway Ancestors) of her & Walter de Hopton.

So then I went to [Base Camp] and looked for Nathaniel & Richard (Robert already has a trail to a surety baron). Richard's trail shows it as underway, but Nathaniel's is marked "ready for review" (but not who to). You could check the profiles from Ela down to Nathaniel against the checklist to polish them up for review - or add maintenance categories for what might be needed (see [this page]) - to help give the trail with Ela a boost up for the next one to be reviewed.

I'm a bit swamped with all the logistics involved with prepping the project's profiles to meet the clarified guidelines or I'd volunteer to do the review now, but if you'll review the profiles in the trail between Littleton & Ela & at least "flag" them with needs=Review and Approval (see [this page] for details of the section to be added too), I'll put Littleton to Ela on my list for the new year.

Cheers, Liz

one more, then I've got to go do Christmas stuff...

You're certainly welcome to join the project even if you don't have a Gateway Ancestor. You could be Littleton's guardian & we could count your work on his trail to Ela as meeting the 2nd requirement (developing a trail - it's been a while since Doug prepared the trail).

Let me!

Cheers, Liz

I am very interested in this project and am reading through the requirements. I have "certain" connections to 15 at least through basically 2 of my surnames: Greer and Holland. Is it ok if I use the "Descendant Sticker" for now on those surnames. Sherrie

Hi! The Magna Carta project has some copy/paste examples of Descendant stickers that you can use, but it does not monitor the use of those stickers. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Stickers

You're also welcome to "test the waters" by joining as an affiliate member - add Magna Carta Project Affiliate to your profile & send a request to join to the Profile Alerts Google Group - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta (include your WikiTree ID ... I can't always tell who's asking by the e-mail).

Yes, I'd love to join the Magna Carta Project.

Hi Kelley! Please post which Gateway you wish to be Guardian for - see the list at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Gateway_Ancestors

Thanks!

Hi again! I had the chance to look at your family tree - would you be interested in joining the project as the Gateway Guardian for Elizabeth (Marshall) Lewis? It looks like she's your Gateway, and Base Camp shows that her trail is ready for review. I took a look at some of them, and I think the trails qualifies as needing development, but there is info in them to get you started. Let me know!

Yes, I'd love to do it!
Cool! I've added you/Elizabeth to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Trail_Tracks

I'll edit Base Camp too - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Team_Base_Camp

Welcome to the project!

I appreciate your response and have determined that I do connect to the 17, have reached out to one line that  carries 9 connecting point, 7 of those are direct. It will be interesting to see the response  from the profile managers,... I see that as a delicate space to jump into, where proofs have to be challenged. Guess I'll opt for the affiliate option until I can be sure of the proofs.
by Sherrie Mitchell G2G6 Mach 5 (51.8k points)
Hi again - I think i may have glossed over something...

affiliate/member isn't a question of whether or not you're related to a surety baron (or a gateway). it's whether or not you want to be associated with WikiTree's Magna Carta project & at what level: affiliate means you're interested & you affiliates can join the google group to help the project watch over profiles on its watchlist; member means you're interested in helping work toward the project's goal of having a project-approved trail to a surety baron from each of the Gateway Ancestors documented by Richardson. Any WikiTree member is welcome as either an affiliate or a member, regardless of proofs or lineage.

Cheers, Liz

Thanks for the update Liz.  I've considered joining the project for a long time, but was dissuaded by the following:  "Please remember, GOAL #1 is to complete one trail for each Gateway Ancestor. Please pick one that is ready to get started before working on additional trails for a favorite Gateway Ancestor!"  I only have the time and interest to work on my own ancestor who already has a trail developed, but several that are not.  Is the project still emphasizing Goal #1?  Thanks.

Also, the "Project page" link in the post here, just before 'Base camp' is a broken link.

by Kerry Larson G2G6 Pilot (234k points)

yup, still emphaizing Goal #1. If you'd like to be an affiliate member, add Magna Carta Project Affiliate to your profile & send a request to join to the Profile Alerts Google Group - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta (include your WikiTree ID ... I can't always tell who's asking by the e-mail).

ps- thanks for pointing out the broken link. it's fixed now.
Thanks Liz.

Thanks Liz for your help! I've examined my links to several direct lines at this point, Grandfathers especially and see that I am directly connected and the merges all flow, connecting in some fashion to all 17 and all is marked "confident". I'll do a sticker and would like to join as an affiliate member.

Will help as I can on the Gateway Ancestors project. Mitchell-17863

Hi Andrea - I replied to your private message with lots of details. Let me know if you want to go the badged-member route (which would allow you to be Gateway Guardian for George Reade, but you'd need to work on a different Gateway-to-Baron trail, since George already has one) or the Affiliate route, which means you could join the profile alerts Google Group and help oversee profiles of interest to you (such as George's), but you could spend your time working on additional trails for George instead of an unrelated Gateway.

Cheers, Liz
badged-member route I am looking at both since I got interested in the
magna carta and gateway project.  I enjoy looking up relationships and
trying to identify who is who.  Appreciate your help Liz.  I do need
to go to bed been up since yesterday morning.  It is snowing here so I
cancelled my drs appointment.  I read the requirements and am looking.

Super! I got your e-mail & will sign you up as Gateway Guardian for William Berkeley-448. If you need help moving his entry from the "ready to go" table at Base Camp to the "underway" table, give me a holler. I'll also add you as guardian for Gateway George Reade.

Cheers, Liz

edit: changed to correct WikiTree ID for the Gateway Ancestor; added links. See also https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Trail%20Tracks

Bladen, Saltonstall and Mauleverer share a lot of ancestry with George Reade.
Super Liz....Bless you for all your help
