Quick search + tag photos with new 'WikiTreeTurbo' extension for Chrome

Howdy WikiTree users,

I'm pleased to present the first version of my Chrome extension 'WikiTreeTurbo';

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/wikitreeturbo/ijnkmfbfcafafghcghkmfmfkjijaghpj

It provides 3 features (for now);

  1. Quick search - hit the backquote (`) key and type a name to quickly find and open profiles from your watchlist
  2. Photo face tagging - hover over faces to see who they are, useful for group photos
  3. Collapsible descendant trees - collapse and expand sections of descendant tree for easier navigation

Please try it and tell me what you think, or if you find any bugs/problems.

I'm always interested in hearing about feature requests. If you ever thought to yourself, "I wish I could do X", let me know!

Awesome! I've just added it to my browser. After I've had a chance to play around I'll be happy to share my thoughts.
Julian!

I just got a chance to try this. It is fantastic!

To be honest, when you mentioned the photo tagging, it didn't really pique my interest because of the difficulty in making the photo tags available to other viewers. (Now I see that by saving the photo coordinates in a comment on the photo page you may even be on the path to solving that.)

I love the other two features. Easy searching of Watchlists is something we have always meant to add. But we have never gotten around to it, and if we had, it would not have been done this well.

Same story with collapsible descendant lists. We have had in mind to do that, but I'm sorry to say we never have. You have done it very well, and it's an even more useful feature than I expected it to be. Bravo!

I'm keen to hear about your long-term plans. I think I'll message you privately and/or on the WT_Apps e-mail list.

Go, Julian!

Chris

Say, how can I become a lurker on the WT_Apps e-mail list?

Thanks... nice feature.
I've enjoyed using the collapsible descendant lists and the tagging of faces in photos.

How do I do a quick search of my watch list using ' ?

Thanks and sincerely, Peter

Karen, the list for independent developers (our WT Apps Project) is https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreeapps

You are certainly welcome to lurk. :-)

Peter, after you go to your Watchlist once -- so the Chrome extension can scrape it  -- just hit the ~/` key while on any WikiTree page. (Side note: This interferes with using ~~~~ for signatures.)

>> (Now I see that by saving the photo coordinates in a comment on the photo page you may even be on the path to solving that.)

Maybe this approach also could be used for GPS coordinates of where a picture is taken.... then some techy could do a photo map of pictures inside Wikitree....

I like the GPS coordinates idea Magnus!

@Julian ;-)

Genealogy and Geolocations  is something cool 2017 when everyone has a GPS in the pocket.... I have thought it would be nice to have an app telling What's next to me and get Wikitree people/events next to me....

To do that Wikitree needs

  • better location support
  • more structure in WIkiTree....
    • getting locations/dates on photos would be one step
    • when adding a photo or a church record as a picture you already today add a date and a location (just a text string)
      • using the same approach as above then we could add coordinates for church books of where the event happened...

Aleš has also spoken about an event template G2G 289441 ==> we could get alerts.....

Quick search shouldn't appear when you hit ~, that's a bug. I've fixed it and uploaded, just need to wait for update to be pushed to your browser.

Nice features Julian, thank you!

Have it runnung on Chromium in Kubuntu:

Versie 53.0.2785.143 Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit)

Ah, I found it doesn't work for me. Reason: the ` key is already being used as a shortcut for another extension I use - being Evernote clipper. I guess I will just have to change the shortcut on that extension, as I don't think you can change it on WikiTree Turbo?
Sorry Liane, there is currently no way to change the shortcut key for WikiTree Turbo.

Julian! This is incredible! Thank you for putting this together. I just now installed it and have only begun to experiment. Very, very cool!!

A question and a couple bits of feedback:

  • Watchlist search: Is there a way to scroll past the bottom of the screen when you have a long list?
  • Photo tagging: Some help text in the photo comment indicating that deleting the comment will delete the tags might be a good idea.
  • Collapsible descendants: LOVE this!!!!

Julie, did you click "Show All" first to get the long list ?
Watchlist search did not "show all" for me either. This is a great app, though.
Thanks Julie!

I'll have a think about the 'too many quick search results' problem. I want to keep all the results right there on the page - no extra clicking or scrolling. Perhaps multiple columns?

You're right about some documentation on how comments work. I'll get onto it. :)

Spent 2 days ago a day listening to Google new machine learning APIs and

  • You can rather easy
    • get a video transcribed
    • ==>
      • you can search in the transcribed text
      • and find the video sequence with the specific word.....

      •
  • ==> we can upload videos and link to the scene in the video this person is part of.

I have succeeded find videos for Hedlund-84 but it takes a lot of time finding a scene and its easy to miss....

Sounds great! Thanks!

I have been wondering if wikitree will ever have a Chrome app for irishgenealogy.ie? I am trying to gather information on hundreds of Irish Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths for the many families I am related to in County Cork.

Thanks again!

Hi Sharon,

I'm new to genealogy, so have only really used Wikitree so far. I don't really have the knowledge or resources to tie in data from other sites at this stage :/

Thank you!

But I do have a problem if I need to post the four tildes regular.

The moment I click "Shift and `" to make a ~ the extension opens and I can not type my four tildes (needed by checking in at shifts).

Is there a solution as I love the tool.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards from The Netherlands.

What machine (PC/Mac) do you use and web browser and version....
Hi Magnus!

PC and using Chrome. It happened as I was typing into a profile after my comment Shift ` to start four tildes.

Late here and of to bed. Thank you taking time for me. :)

version................. hmm not sure. Do not know where to find that so fast. Got it if this makes sense to you: Version 62.0.3202.94 (Official Build) (64-bit)

But it has been a while I removed it and loaded a newer version. Maybe I should start by that.

Nah........Google Chrome is up to date

Thank you Astrid! That was a bug - it shouldn't pop up the quick search menu when you type a ~ character.

I have fixed the bug and uploaded the new version. I'm not sure how long it will take to update in your browser though.
I just noticed that I can't use the tilde (~) character with this extension. I had just added the extension this afternoon.I use a Chromebook, so am using Chrome OS.
Give it a few hours to update Natalie, the tilde (~) bug should disappear.

I can't get this feature to work for me at all. I had the evernote clipper that used the same shortcut, I changed the shortcut on that but the ` isn't working still. What do I do?
by Lisa Roberts G2G6 Mach 2 (28.5k points)
I'm not sure Lisa. Have you tried disabling the Evernote extension?
I can confirm that the quick search is no longer working in Chrome. I'm looking at it now.
I have fixed the extension Lisa, give it a few hours to update and it should work.

Julian - I just tried the collapsible descendants list and the photo tagging. Both very cool and well done. I was wondering how you would store the photo tagging info. Storing it as a comment works well. Not too intrusive. No one normally looks at the comments anyway.
