Can't the suggested matches for a new person be improved?

+10 votes

I am in the process of adding Margaret Elizabeth FRYLINCK married name ADAMS (1914-2001). I have been offered eight possible matches, the first of them being Doris Margaret JOHNSTONE married name ATKINSON (1912-2003). Several of the others are equally ridiculous.

I'm only checking the three whose name at birth is Margaret Adams (mine has that married name, but at least it's in the ball park). The other names should not have been offered.

Can't the algorithm at the very least discard wildly different LNABs?

I agree...some of the matches that are provided are so far off base it isn't funny.  And when you have a common name like Smith or Jones, it is unmanageable.

Ditto the Smiths.  It would help if the match could identify locations better.
Yep, sure would Kitty.  I was just looking at matches for a "French", first name of Maria, maiden name French, somehow there were a lot just because of the name Maria! :(

I just scan down the list and see if any look like a possible match and if they do, I inspect them further, but I don't go to great lengths looking for a needle in a haystack and I certainly don't have the time or inclination to open up all of them to check individually. Smith usually brings up 100+ potential matches. I do however find it useful when it brings up similar profiles I manage that I know are not a match, then I can mark them off and it won't try to merge them.

Bear in mind the algorithm is trying to take into account "uncertain" birth dates as well as potential marriages (be they 1 or several) and also corruptions of names like using their middle name as the preferred name.

More often than not I hit the opposite problem and none of them match until I create the profile. THEN it finds a match it missed before.

I have had a similar problem Steven. Nothing coming up on the match list, so I create a profile and subsequently find there was an existing profile that did not appear on the list.

Hi Dick,

We have improving matches on our to-do list. I'll add your thoughts to our notes.

Maybe the algorithm should incorporate an evaluation of the quality of the match and on the first go offer say the five or six closest. One gives up if there are too many. I tried adding a Charlotte Williams recently ...
What is the status of the request to improve the "search algorithm" when adding a new profile?  Sure could use a time saver.

We were just discussing it on the Team, Patricia. Hopefully soon!
How can I help?
