A bunch of new duplicate profiles

+8 votes
Hi All who work on Hatfield and McCoys,

I just had to go through and mark a bunch of new profiles as duplicates in the Hatfield family. This is starting with Hatfield-248 and going down.

I noticed this because of some changes done on Weddington profiles that were undocumented, which I've had to roll back.

There may be other profiles within Hatfield / McCoy that may need review or may have possible duplicates. I'm sure I haven't looked at everything.

Any assistance on getting duplicates resolved and merged, so there won't be new ones that crop up, would be great

Thanks for adding the "duplicates" tag, Lynda. I didn't know there was a tag for that.

Can't comment on the families in question, but would like to know if there has been any consideration of the phenomenon. I've noted duplicates in various families (mainly Osborns) and in one case inadvertently added several myself before having to propose mergers.

Thinking back to the latter, it may have been part haste, but also somehow I didn't see anything being flagged as potential matches. (Not sure how.) So I wonder if one reason for duplicates might be a combination of user error and system either error or being too subtle with flags.

Another reason might be new folks not entirely clear on the subject, and intending to put their proper family tree onto the site, regardless of what may already be there.

If the user community grows, this is likely to become a more frequent problem, especially as the genealogies on the wiki are filled out. IOW a kind of paradox - more users (in more or less the same demographics), but less need for new pages added (even as there is ongoing need for more data on existing pages).

WikiTree is very good at initiating and providing info to new users. But another question - if it is indeed duplicates is a big issue - is whether the info for new members needs to be adjusted in light of ongoing changes on the wiki & user community.

Just some thoughts...

Hi Don,

You're right, in that in this case, it is a new user who is probably not aware of how things work here at Wikitree.

However, if we can, I would rather not turn this thread into a discussion about the wider problem. It's just that the Hatfield family (and the wider Hatfield & McCoy families) has had very specific issues with many duplicates in the past. It's also a very confusing set of families, with many legends, intermarriages, etc., so it's easy for connections to get out of whack.

I very much just wanted to alert those working these families to this one particular issue, so we can avoid any major hassles down the road.
