My mother, who was Dutch, left me an interesting set of pictures and articles about Dutch National Costumes. I made a blog about it. If the link works, you may be interested in browsing through it.

Hi Stella,

Wonderful Blog love the costumes and noticed you were still searching for where one of the costumes was from exactly, perhaps here you can find it ? Geheugen van Nederland and here at Pinterest are a whole lot more :)

And I added it to the Portal World-The Netherlands now, if you want to add more links feel free to add them there !

Joop also has some great pictures added to some profiles from relatives and people in costumes, perhaps he knows more about them ?

And I have one from my mums great grandmother, she was from Groningen /Friesland, so not sure where the costume was from exactly,

Fantastic picture.
Thank you Bea. That’s great. I still have part of the costume from my Great grandma (Oma). I have a garnet necklace made from the choker she wore. It had several rows and the garnets were shared after she died.
Bea, there are some lovely profile pictures of the Dutch National Costumes on Wikitree. I wonder if I could add to my blog by using some of them? Perhaps I will ask the Profile managers? It would be good to have those pictures in one place, wouldn’t it?

Stella Jones
Thanks both :) And yes I would just ask the managers, I'm sure they all will like to see them all saved and in one place Stella.

My grandfather loved his grandmother dearly, the picture was always treasured by him and he told my aunt they should always honor her and take real good care of her picture. Guess he would be amazed and proud to see the picture now is saved (hopefully) forever and for all next generations and the whole world to see :)
How sweet! and yes, to have someone to love and be loved in return is the greatest gift any of us can hope to achieve. I carry a picture of my Dutch Oma with me always.

Beautiful, thanks Stella.

I remember visiting Walcheren as a child every year in the 1980s/1990s, and there were still older women wearing this. Hopefully some still are.

My great-grandparents from Zeelandic Flanders, the southern part of the Zeeland province, used to wear "klederdracht"(as we call it) too, but I have yet to find a picture of them.

Thank you Lennart. I think it’s very important to keep culture intact whilst embracing new ones too as our societies expand. I enjoyed your story about visiting grandma.

Terrific blog.  Thanks for sharing it Stella. Using the portraits on profiles adds so much to the biographies. Your mother's collection will be enjoyed and admired by all of us on Wikitree and beyond.

Hi Stella,

I saw your image at your blogpage. The costume down here looks very much from Zeeland. It also says Walcheren I see now.

I ve been searching a little at the internet as the "oorijzer" with the curls is notable. And yes I find them made in Zeeland and worn at Walcheren. Besides I see at the top of the card it says Walcheren too. I think as I only see images of young girls wearing the curly oorijzer it might have been used by only young girls. I think the woman at the painting is also young.

Curly oorijzer made in Middelburg but worn at Walcheren it says here

And here a young girl and here a young woman with a different hat but with the same curly oorijzer. The costume of the young woman is named her "opknapdracht". clothes worn by a peasant woman after her work is done and is going out shopping or visiting.

Maybe you can find some more info by contacting the Zeeuws Museum with info in English. :)

This is very interesting Stella! Thank you so much for sharing!
