Newbe To WikiTree

Stared over a year ago using ScotlandsPeople to do my side of the family. Used MyHeritage and Family Tree Builder, by soon reached 250, so pestered for subscription. Just finished my 14 trial of Ancestry, which was useful to expand my tree. But so many errors and sources a bit wobbly in lots of cases. I don't want a monthly subscription as I may leave the work for a few months etc. Like to pay per view or use.

So now using Wikitree and just loaded my latest GEM file exported from Ancestry.co.uk this needs a good tidy-up and correct sources included.

Still unsure of this site, but like the notion of providing sources. Not linked with anyone yet.

Just need to enter into Wikitree my data then start looking further back in Ireland (Joined Irish Roots - I think)

Any help or comments appreciated as find the site a bit different form the other main sites. Also using the tree with 2nd marriages and different lines.

Best regards,

Graham, Somerset, England, UK

Hi Graham, Welcome to WikiTree.

Yes we are a bit different then other genealogy sites because there is only one profile for any one person that ever lived where other sites have many trees with many of the same profiles of a person that ever lived.

Concerning sources, several examples can be found at this link: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources. and here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Jillaine's_Dream_Source_Help_Page.

After you collected all your sources and posted them, it is recommended you write a short "biography" for the individual. A bio would start off with name of person and when, where he or she was born... Then parents name if you know them... Then if they were married and how many children.

If your not familar with WikiTree "formatting", a good place to learn about it and how it will look, is at: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Formatting. More useful links can be found here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Most_Used_Links .

And always go back and review our  Member How to pages at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To

They will save you time, energy and frustration as you add your family profiles. Also you may want to bookmark the Help Index https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Help_Index

Check out our projects as well. Since you have Irish roots you may like this project if you haven't found it yet: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Irish_Roots .

Hope that helps!!

Welcome to WikiTree, Graham!

You've already gotten some great advice.  The only thing I can add is to say that there is no rush.  Take your time, read the instructions, add your family one at a time, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you get stuck!  :)
