A James H. Alexander married Evaline Jones in Carter County, Kentucky in 1858.  That family later moved to Ohio.

At that time, I did have Alexander relatives in Greenup, Carter, and Estill Counties in Kentucky, but I can't find a proper match.  I realize that there was another, unrelated Alexander family in Wayne County, Kentucky, but there were probably more Alexander families there as well.

He was born in Kentucky about 1834 as the marriage records for Greenup County, Kentucky, show him to be one year younger than his wife.

maybe not?

At the moment, I have two James H. Alexander profiles born about 1834 in Greenup County.  My double cousin, James {{Alexander-8299]], married Louisa Cooper in Carter County in 1852.  The second is James [[Alexander-11333]] who married Evaline Jones in Carter County in 1858.  They are not mergible unless James H. was a bigamist.

Lewis's granddaughter, Sarah, was born to James and Louisa in 1858 and his grandson, James A., was born in 1860.  James and Evaline had a daughter Nancy Jane born in 1859.

I've not marked the James H. Alexander's as rejected matches or unmerged matches yet, but their birth years are very close and both in the same county.
Lewis's son James H. was not the James H. who married Evaline Jones in 1858.  He was already married to Louisa Cooper and they had 3 children after the other James H. married Evaline Jones.

This doesn't answer your question, but his birth range seems to vary.  The death record is in the same location (Preble) as the 1880 census but for some reason today, I'm not able to open the images on familysearch to see if it has anymore info.

"United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8SF-BS7 : 16 July 2017), James Alexander, Jefferson, Preble, Ohio, United States; citing enumeration district ED 199, sheet 113B, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1060; FHL microfilm 1,255,060.
