It looks like the name is spelled both ways on records and census. Goettee is what is on her father's headstone. The PM might want to explore the earliest version of her surname and provide some sources. They should also explain why they choose to go with one over the other.

I believe Goethe (pronounced Gur-tuh) is the original German surname.  It has been said that the Goethe name is something of a problem. At least for English speakers it raises a tricky issue of pronunciation.  The original spelling has an umlout over the 'o'.
