Biography Builders Dec/Jan 2017. Given Name "C"

+14 votes
1.6k views

Because Christmas and Chanukah both start with the letter "C", this Month Dec. 15 through Jan. 15: The theme is "given name C".

That's first names that begin with "C" for instance Caroline, Caleb, Chris.

Biography Builders Goal: To make profiles as complete as possible with well-written biographies and sources. You should research as much as you can find on a person, writing the information onto the profiles to create as complete a life story as you can for that person. Sourcing should be full citations. This includes adding categories and links to events and people connected to that profile and citing all those additions. See the first month for examples of how to participate.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section.

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • One of the suggestions was siblings. I think this takes up real estate.
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories/Projects.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page, linked below.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

Genealogically Defined. If you've been adding this to profiles...use [[Space:Genealogically Defined|Genealogically Defined]] this allows the "What links here" to work properly.
Does that mean I have to go back through all my profiles and change from the old template to the new format? Or is there a bot doing that?
I would say that's up to you Michelle. It's ok if they don't show up in the "What links here." They are still marked Gen Def.
I can't figure out the purpose of the "What links here feature?" It just looks like one long list of profile names that are not alphabetical.
I've never looked at the list myself. But I suppose it's so people can see what profiles are using a page, but if it's not even alphabetical it doesn't help much.

I see you found plenty of "C" to keep you busy. Thank you
Thanks Anne, I need these challenges to keep me motivated. I have been on wikitree for a year next month and have put on over 3000 profiles in the hope of preserving years of work and making it available for others. A lot of them still need more sources and tidying up. Trouble is, almost every time I do a biography I add more people.

Okie-doke. Selected first profile to work on:

. . .and may be the only "C" to get done. She is the spouse of an orphan i adopted quite awhile ago, to work on and see much to do and many family profiles to add, none if them beginning with C   She will keep me busy for quite awhile.

  1. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Given-17  Catherine Given: Biography and sources added, Father added and connected him to the WikiTree, She now has a Mother also,
  2. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gibbs-83 Cornelia Gibbs, daughter of above Catherine. Added sources, biography and photo
  3. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Skillingstad-10 Christine Skillingstad - updated sources and created a biography.
  4. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jåsund-1  Cornelius Malmin - updated sources and added a biography
  5. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gibbs-366 Catherine Gibbs Holmes - added a biography from what little information is available
  6. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Davis-30330 Clara Lucinda Davis Tatlock - added biography
  7. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harder-469 Clara Harder Siebe. Updated sources, added biography and photos

This "C" BB theme is proving to be a great incentive to work on profiles, that otherwise would be ignored forevermore. Thank you Anne :)
Thanks Patricia, I was looking at Christine's profile. Some of the expressions on the faces in the family photo are priceless. It was pretty common for folks to try to look serious, but the disgruntled (can I be somewhere else look?) made me laugh. I've seen it on my brothers in photos.

Very droll Connie :)
You do nice work Connie, Carlos and Madge, are lovely together. My grandfather also got gassed in the war and spent a lot of time recuperating and then had recurring bouts of lung trouble.
Your comments are much appreciated.  Few people are aware of the severity and long-term effects of World War I. Carlos and Madge share an interesting niche in history.

Great - I'm in. Didn't realise how quick the last month went and I didn't get all the profile done that I wanted to lol
by Michelle Wilkes G2G6 Pilot (169k points)
You and me both Michelle. I keep getting waylaid.

First one done

Curnick-68 Charles Gilbert : Birth, marriage death, burial, 1861-1911 census details, list of children with birth year/place and research notes.

and a sad one Bachell-7 Caroline - Baptism, birth year/place, marriage, 1841 & 1851 census - list of children with birth year/place, emigration and burial just 2 years later.

Aylward-243 Charles an apt one as he married Ann Christmas, and in 1841 was living with his sister-in-law Mary Christmas). Added baptism, marriage date/place, list of children with baptism dates/place. 1841 census. Details of wife's death, and his death date/place. Genealogically defined.

Another sad one - Robinson-24485 Charles. Baptism, marriage, list of children, 1841 & 1851 census and death. Research notes.

Tagg-116 Cornelius. Birth year/place, baptism, parents, marriage & spouse, newspaper report, list of children with birth year/place, death, burial and 1841-1911 census - genealogically defined

Lanham-586 Constance Dorothy. Birth date/place, baptism date/place, marriage year, spouse, death date/place and burial date/place. Not added children's names as they are probably still living - Genealogically defined apart from children names not listed.

Payne-9695 Coventry Payne - a debatable Baronet - lots of interesting newspaper reports detailing his lineage and the reason to the questionable title of Baronet - I would like to expand on this family at some point in time as I only added the most relevant newspaper reports  referring to genealogical facts, and there is so much more to add.

Unfortunately I didn't get as many done as I intended, but have been busy helping a new wiki-tree cousin get up to speed and connect to me.

Michelle, I'm just getting around to counting (got waylaid again) You reached 100. Congratulations.

I'm in. A person can only bake so many Cookies.

1. Caroline Jane Hedley Anderson Rooth. Gen. Defined
2. Clarence Alfred Kinsey Denison. Gen Defined
3. Caroline Amelia Jackson Symmes. Gen. Defined
4. Cawthra Mulock. Gen. Defined
5. Clemoh Clifford Reeves

Since Caroline died as recently as 1949, the cemetery probably has a record of her burial. Getting hold of someone might be difficult if the cemetery is small. Or if the church is still located there it would be worth checking church records.
Thanks, Anne, that's a good idea.

Oh, dear.  Not a single 'C' in my direct line 5 generation tree, but I'm sure there are some siblings to help out with.  Here I go:

1.  Charles Huddy Norrington - his father was another Charles, and his mother Charlotte - do I get extra points? LOL
2.  Caroline (Damerell) Trout - also known as Catherine
3.  Caroline (Edgcumbe) Edgecombe
4.  Charles Alfred Blagdon
5.  Charles Walter Bovett

I should be dusting and vacuuming as we speak, but I'd rather be wikitreeing.
I know.  I have my day job to work on, but for several minutes there I was biting my nails trying to decide if I should work first or do some bio building.  Work won.  A paycheck kind of matters :-)
It only took four long months, but I have finally reached 10 profiles!!
[trumpet fanfare] Congratulations!  [confetti throwing]

That is a super profile about Cornelius Merry. I never even think about there being Irish in New England that early.

Note in the following excerpt: It is unclear what word you meant to use between 1673 ___ 1675.

a Northfield settler of 1673 an 1675 who in the later year had a grant of 11
Thanks Anne. It was fun to research him. What a character he was!  I will check the excerpt.  I appreciate your help.

I'll do a few:

1. Clinton Many (1920 - 1967)

2. Clinton Seth Abbott (1889 - 1939)

3. Charles Marsh (1898 - 1971): Not sure if he counts, I had written the bio before but hadn't included links to family members or his immigration category, so I added those. I also had to correct an error I made about his immigration.

4. Clifford Rose (1903-1965)

5. Charles Marsh Jr. (1924 - 1993) - I didn't make a profile for his wife because I have no information for her besides her maiden name (no dates or locations either).

6. Caterina Colletti Porretta (1867-1943)

That's enough changes, as far as I'm concerned, to count Charles. Thank you.

Virginia to Missouri, (Cyrus). That's an interesting migration.
Thanks Anne! It was actually Virginia to North Carolina to Missouri. Not sure why the Connollys ended up in Missouri, or whether any of their other children besides Bailey moved with them, but then I'm not very far along on researching this family yet.

I cant count this one. I did it a long time ago, but I am particularly proud of it.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Todd-76 Christopher Todd.
I like that one, It looks good and its interesting. Love the pictures.
I love the way pictures improve a profile, so try to add them when I have appropriate pictures.
Yes, pictures are good, Perhaps I should make a bit more effort to include them. Trouble is, I cannot wait to find out more about the next person.
Really nice work Anne!  I enjoyed reading the bios.

I don't think I've ever done this challenge before! I'll give it a whirl.

  1. I'm gonna work on the bio of Catherine (Warren) Bellamy, my great-great-great uncle's wife's mother. (Hence why she got sources but no work beyond that. I even wrote a to do note on the profile 5 years ago and probably haven't looked at this profile since!) -- Done as much as I can with the sources I've been able to find!
  2. Camille Daigneault, my great great great uncle -- Done but again with not a tonne of sources!
by Liander Lavoie G2G6 Pilot (454k points)

It's interesting how sometimes you can find tons of items (maybe too many) about a person and other people hardly a drop in the bucket. Those two look "done" as they can be for the moment.
