I'm wondering what country or area the Vanaustrand family would be from originally.

My mother's grandmother was a Vanaustrand (or Vanostrand) from Oakland, CA, late 1800's to early 1900's. Her brother, Frank, was a pharmacist in Oakland. I am curious about this wing of the family.

It may possibly be of German Origin.

It would probably not be Germanic in origin, von is the surname prefix in Germanic countries.

The van shows its roots as being Nederland, the second part was probbably Oost which translates as east. Rand is an edge or border which could mean they were the family from the east border. Alternativley the last part could be strand meaning beach so it may have meant from the east beach.

I can find no names like this in any Nederland database, could they have been from South Africa?

Thank you, Rhian. I don't know about South Africa. My great-grandmother who had the name was a gypsy of sorts - Tarrot cards, fortune telling, snake oil sales, etc. She was a bit of a con-artist and very unconventional - traveling saleswoman in the west with no husband until she hitched her wagon to my great-grandfather, causing him a lot of pain and drama. It's the stuff movies are made of.
The is a region in South Africa called Vanostrand, sevel families apparently emigrated from South Africa to the US and Canada to avoid the wars that were brewing there. There are some families still in Canada, one is a sports person who is often in the news.
